Jefferson Co. eyes housing, business park growth tied to Micron plant JEFFERSON COUNTY, New York (WWNY) - Local leaders say Micron’s planned semiconductor plant could bring new housing to Jefferson County and expansion at the Watertown Airport Business Park. County Legislator Christopher Boulio serves more than 7,000 people across the southern portion of the county, but he is hoping that number will grow. “Micron is huge, and these people have to live somewhere, and where better to live than the North Country,” said Boulio, a Republican who represents District 10. County officials see role for Jefferson County When Micron opens its semiconductor plant in Clay, Boulio and other officials believe Jefferson County can play host. “We’re entertaining places for them, for housing, for warehouses, whatever can come our way,” Boulio said. “We have identified a lot of sites that make a lot of sense for housing in Jefferson County. Not just southern Jefferson County, some central parts and some northern parts as well,” said Marshall Weir, CEO of the Jefferson County Industrial Development Agency. Weir has been part of meetings between local officials and Micron. He said something they are taking into account is the construction on Interstate 81. “It can be quicker to get from southern Jefferson County to Clay than it can be to get from southern Syracuse to Clay, especially with all the construction and all those things going on,” Weir said. Airport business park expansion discussed Another topic of discussion has been expanding the business park at the Watertown International Airport. “We’d like to make the site as big as possible. The bigger, the better in terms of site development,” Weir said. The business park is around 90 acres. As for who would move into the business park, Weir said it would more likely be a supplier to Micron than Micron itself. “That would be the low-hanging fruit to attract a business into Jefferson County,” Weir said. Micron is still years from production, but plans are underway for Jefferson County to benefit from the plant’s economic effect. Copyright 2026 WWNY. All rights reserved.
