Студенты JEE Advanced требуют отменить лимит в два попытки и вернуть право на третий экзамен

TNN | Posted August 26, 2026 12:56 PM A group of JEE aspirants has urged the Joint Admission Board (JAB) and IITs to reconsider the existing attempt limit for the JEE (Advanced), seeking either three attempts in three consecutive years or two attempts spread across three consecutive years. The demand has been raised through an online petition seeking the reinstatement of a third attempt for JEE Advanced 2027. The petition has crossed 10,000 signatures, according to the students behind the campaign, who are targeting 15,000 signatures. At present, candidates are permitted to appear for JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. The students have argued that the restriction can disadvantage aspirants who require additional preparation time, particularly those from rural areas and economically weaker backgrounds. In a representation addressed to the JAB and concerned authorities, JEE aspirant Dev Kaushik said the request was aimed at providing students with an additional opportunity rather than lowering the examination standard. "The request is not for an unfair advantage, but for a more inclusive opportunity for deserving aspirants who may require additional time to compete on an equal footing," Kaushik said. Unequal Access to Preparation The petition argues that students do not enter the JEE preparation cycle with the same level of access to coaching, academic guidance and learning resources. It says students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds may begin focused preparation only after completing class XII, while others may have access to structured preparation much earlier. The students have also cited financial constraints, family responsibilities and inadequate educational infrastructure as factors that can affect preparation. According to the petition, JEE Advanced requires a high level of conceptual understanding, analytical ability and problem-solving skills, which may take longer to develop for some students. The students have therefore sought a third attempt, particularly for candidates who have already taken two attempts but believe they can improve with another year of preparation. The petition also points to the high-stakes nature of JEE Advanced, arguing that factors such as health issues, examination anxiety and mistakes on a single examination day can affect a candidate's performance. JEE Main, Advanced Attempt Policies The campaigners have also highlighted what they describe as an inconsistency between the attempt rules for JEE Main and JEE Advanced. They have questioned why candidates should have greater flexibility in JEE Main while JEE Advanced continues to restrict candidates to two attempts in two consecutive years. The students have proposed either allowing three attempts in three consecutive years or introducing a two-attempts-in-three-consecutive-years model for JEE Advanced 2027. The campaigners have argued that an additional attempt would not increase the number of IIT seats or alter the difficulty level of the examination. They have also maintained that candidates would continue to be filtered through JEE Main before appearing for JEE Advanced. Petition Cites COVID-era Additional Attempt The petition cites the additional attempt provided to candidates during the COVID-19 pandemic as a precedent for allowing greater flexibility in the examination system. According to the campaigners, the temporary relaxation showed that the JEE Advanced system could accommodate an additional attempt without compromising examination standards. The students have therefore appealed to the IIT Council and JAB to consider extending the provision to JEE Advanced 2027, with a particular focus on candidates seeking a second drop. The petition says the demand is not intended to dilute the standards of the IIT entrance examination but to provide students with an additional opportunity to demonstrate their ability.
