It’s Not About Standing Out, It’s About How You Conduct Yourself
For Anupam Thareja, Co-founder, Classic Legends, the All Stars story was never really about a badge on a motorcycle. It was about identifying a certain kind of rider and, more importantly, the values that define him.
“All-Star is what you live by,” says Thareja. And that thought has gradually become central to how Jawa sees its rider, its motorcycles and its community.
When Jawa returned to India, nostalgia was naturally part of the conversation. But Thareja believes nostalgia alone could never build a contemporary motorcycle brand. “People thought it was only nostalgia, but nostalgia cannot be the only pillar on which you build a bike.”
That thinking also shaped the way Jawa approached motorcycle design. Rather than beginning with specifications, the brand starts by imagining the person who would ride the motorcycle. “We actually start defining the character of the rider, and the character of a bike if it was a person.”
Over time, certain words kept recurring in that process: understated, cool, character, courage, discipline and the codes you live by. Thareja says the brand eventually realised that these weren't merely words being used internally. They were increasingly becoming associated with Jawa itself.
That association extended beyond motorcycles. Jawa's involvement with initiatives such as Shaurya Divas, the Kargil Vijay Yatra and the Ride of the Marakkars brought the brand closer to communities where discipline, camaraderie and a larger sense of purpose are central. Thareja saw a similar ethos in the armed forces and in sport, where individuals come together as part of something larger than themselves.
“The moment people work as a team, there is humility to that word,” he says. And humility became another part of the All Stars code.
The insignia itself reinforced the idea. Thareja describes it as something that feels instantly familiar, even though people may not know exactly where they have seen it before. Its visual language can evoke ships, aircraft, sports teams, flags and other symbols of collective identity. For Jawa, that familiarity became a way of expressing the values behind All Stars.
The philosophy also comes back to the rider. “Different is a very overcrowded place right now, everybody wants to be different, and that's so boring,” Thareja says.
The Jawa rider, in his view, isn't looking for attention. He is comfortable in his own skin and doesn't need to constantly prove his individuality. “He knows he's noticed because of his character, because of the way he conducts himself, and that for him is more important than anything else.”
That distinction is important to the All Stars identity. It is not about being the loudest person in the room or the rider who wins every time. “All-Star is not the guy who wins every time, that superstar, that shooting star,” says Thareja. Instead, it is the person who keeps showing up, quietly doing what he believes in.
“All-Star is a character which is in all of us," he adds.
The motorcycles carrying the All Stars insignia are therefore different expressions of the same philosophy. The journey began with the Jawa 42 FJ, followed by the Jawa 42 Bobber, and now arrives at the evolved Jawa 42. While each motorcycle has its own personality, Thareja sees them as part of one larger story.
“The bikes are still 42, that doesn't change. This is the overarching positioning called All Stars,” he says.
The latest Jawa 42 is also a significant moment for the motorcycle that helped establish Jawa's modern identity in India. Launched in 2018, the 42 challenged several assumptions about what a classic motorcycle could look and feel like. It brought an off-centre instrument panel, distinctive colourways and a contemporary interpretation of classic design to the segment.
Thareja says the idea was to make a modern classic rather than simply recreate the past. “We don't live in the past, we have to contemporise the classic, we have to live today, and that's how we interpreted the modern classic.”
That also means the Jawa 42 cannot remain static. With more than 60 changes, the latest version is an evolution of the motorcycle rather than a departure from it.
From a visual perspective, the changes include a shorter, swept-up silencer and new design elements, while the motorcycle also gets improvements to ground clearance, heat management and its thermal system. But Thareja is reluctant to reduce the evolution to a list of specifications.
For him, that evolution is about keeping the motorcycle relevant while remaining true to the modern-classic character that made the 42 significant in the first place. “Being true to a modern classic, it has to keep on evolving with time.”
The All Stars philosophy is intended to extend beyond the motorcycle as well. Jawa's rider community, the Nomads, remains an important part of that ecosystem. Thareja sees All Stars as a philosophy that can help define why people identify with the brand and with each other.
“It's all about the community,” he says. “All Stars is a philosophy which defines the Jawa community.”
As the All Stars story enters its third chapter with the evolved Jawa 42, the insignia is ultimately expected to stand for something bigger than a particular motorcycle. Thareja believes the symbol carries values that feel increasingly relevant to a younger generation.
“If you look at this bike, and if I ask you, tell me what comes to your mind, I can almost guarantee that nothing negative comes to your mind.”
Instead, he sees familiarity, respect, courage and conduct. The three stars within the insignia are tied to the values at the heart of the philosophy.
For Jawa, then, All Stars is not about creating another motorcycle identity, but more about putting a name to something the brand believes its riders already understand.
“It is a code, it is a conduct, which is also expressed in these bikes. So All Stars is an expression of this code of conduct in the bikes.”
