By Kory Woods, Tribune News Service ALLEN PARK – Detroit Lions quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell outlined what he expects from Jared Goff heading into their sixth season together, which is “probably more of a consistency.” At first, Brunell’s words could raise an eyebrow, maybe even appear to be a knock on the 11-year veteran.Over the past three NFL seasons, Goff has been quite the model of consistency and efficiency. He’s the only quarterback in the league to pass for at least 4,500 yards each year over that span. Goff has also finished in the top five in passing touchdowns, and his completion percentage has been above 67% over that span as well. Like any other quarterback around the league, Goff has had a game or two each season over the mentioned span where he hasn’t played his best football. But in the grand scheme of things, Goff has shown a tendency to be one of the most productive quarterbacks in the NFL, which is the consistency Brunell is looking for him to continue. “Staying consistent. Staying at the top of his game. He will. He works very hard,” Brunell told reporters during veteran minicamp. “He’s smart and has been in this system. He’s very accurate. And we expect him to play at a high level, and he will. That’s what he brings to the table every day. Listen, this is just OTAs, this is minicamp, and you approach every day as if it were the regular season, which we love.” Brunell added, “We will go as far as (Goff) takes us and we’re very fortunate to have a quarterback like him, (and) to have a person and leader like him in this building.” In a vacuum, Goff’s 2025 campaign was above average. He finished second in both passing yards (4,564) and passing touchdowns (34) behind former Lions quarterback and eventual MVP, Matthew Stafford, who now plays for the Los Angeles Rams. Goff also threw single-digit interceptions (eight) and completed 68% of his passes. That said, the Lions finished 9-8 on the season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2023. Despite his consistent body of above-average play, Goff typically has one or two games where he performs below standards, with last year’s Christmas Day game against the Minnesota Vikings being the most recent example. During the loss that dropped the Lions to 8-8, Goff finished with a whopping five turnovers – two interceptions and three fumbles – and completed only 62% of his passes. While that was only one game, it was a microcosm of the whole season, as the Lions’ offense was in a state of flux due to injuries along the offensive line and inconsistent execution, leading Lions coach Dan Campbell to strip former offensive coordinator John Morton of his play-calling duties. When asked about coaching Goff through the frustrations last year, Brunell stated they had already moved past it. They’ve taken inventory of what went wrong, self-scouted their plays and areas they could have improved, and identified situations where they could have been better across the board. “At some point, you have to move on. And I think, really, this spring, this whole team, offense, defense, and special teams, we really are looking forward,” Brunell said. “I know it’s been brought up about last year. But, honestly, I think this team and the coaches, all of us, we’re thinking about this upcoming season. We have learned from our mistakes last year.” Brunell said it’s time to “go forward and get ready for” the Saints in Week 1. He also raved about Goff’s performance, stating that he “hasn’t missed a beat” through spring and summer practices. Goff’s accuracy, command of the playbook, and understanding of the offense are a few characteristics that leave Brunell feeling he’s playing at a high level. “What I love is not only his talent and his ability, but this is very important to him,” Brunell said. “I think I said this last year, Jared is in pursuit of a championship.
