Jack Harlow’s weekend in Louisville
Louisville native Jack Harlow returned home recently not just for a casual visit, but for a weekend full of community connection, local celebration and philanthropic impact.
Originally in town for a set of sold-out shows at Old Forester’s Paristown Hall on Saturday, Aug. 29, and Monday, Aug. 31, Harlow made the absolute most of his time back home.
Beyond taking the stage, he hosted two community events aimed at uplifting local organizations and bringing the city together.
On Friday, Aug. 28, Harlow kicked off the weekend at Cherokee Park to celebrate the launch of his signature New Balance T500 sneaker.
Dubbed “The Olmsted”, the shoe pays homage to Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect who designed Louisville’s expansive park network as well as New York’s Central Park.
The event was free to the public and attendees were encouraged to pack a blanket and bring friends, fostering a sense of community that Harlow deemed essential to his childhood.
Harlow gives back
This widespread commemoration marks another milestone in Harlow’s ongoing mission to give back to the city that raised him. In 2023, Harlow launched The Jack Harlow Foundation with the goal of reinvesting in Louisville by supporting local initiatives focused on education, the arts and civic engagement.
Launched with sizable gifts to four local organizations, the foundation has since expanded to publicly support over eight local nonprofits including Neighborhood House, Louisville Ballet, Sowing Seeds with Faith, Queer Kentucky and Sponsor 4 Success.
Throughout his philanthropic journey, Harlow has used his platform to draw attention to and support Louisville-owned businesses, including Carmichael’s Bookstore, where he held a pop up event on Sunday, Aug. 30.
On Saturday, Harlow took to Instagram to announce a surprise partnership with Carmichael’s to give away free books to the community. By Sunday morning, a line spanned around the block and down Cherokee Road as locals of all ages waited for their turn to enter the bookstore.
The 48-year-old independent bookstore closed regular business at 3 p.m. and reopened from 4 to 6 p.m. exclusively for the event, distributing over 500 books to eager readers.
Not one for hands-off advocacy, Harlow was present throughout the afternoon, chatting with fans and taking pictures with community members. He tied the event directly to his personal love for reading and his desire to use his platform to share what inspires him.
Harlow even curated a list of his personal recommendations throughout the store, highlighting titles such as “Stoner” by John Williams, “Outline” by Rachel Cusk and “How Proust Can Change Your Life by Alain de Botton.”
If one $50 credit wasn’t generous enough, Harlow doubled down to support another local favorite. Fans who went to Guestroom Records and purchased a copy of his new album were given an additional $50 credit to shop at Carmichael’s.
The weekend was anchored by Harlow’s two sold-out shows at Old Forester’s Paristown Hall, which were opened by fellow Kentuckian James Savage, once again giving a platform to local talent and giving voice to the community that raised him.
