JA Mitsui Leasing partners Serendix on Japan 3D-printed buildings
KEY POINTS
- JA Mitsui Leasing forms business alliance with Serendix, a Japanese 3D-printed housing startup
- Partnership covers financing for construction 3D printers and equipment, plus sales cooperation on facilities and stores
- Tie-up targets construction labor shortages, higher material costs and demand for disaster-resilient buildings in Japan
JA Mitsui Leasing has signed a business alliance agreement with Serendix, a Japanese startup that develops and sells 3D-printed homes, to support broader adoption of 3D-printed construction in Japan, the leasing company said on August 13.
The partnership will support the introduction of Serendix's construction-use 3D printers and related equipment through JA Mitsui Leasing's financing functions. The companies also plan to cooperate in sales of facilities and stores using Serendix's technology by drawing on JA Mitsui Leasing's customer base, while studying new services including building leases.
JA Mitsui Leasing said the agreement is intended to help address social and industry challenges through wider use of construction 3D printers. The company cited rising demand for buildings that can better withstand natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons and heavy rain, while Japan's construction industry faces labor shortages, higher material prices and growing replacement needs for aging buildings and infrastructure.
Serendix, based in Nishinomiya in Hyogo Prefecture, was established in August 2018. The company describes itself as Japan's first 3D-printer housing manufacturer and has been expanding beyond housing by using 3D-printing technology designed to reduce labor needs, shorten construction times, stabilize quality, increase design flexibility and lower environmental impact.
JA Mitsui Leasing said the tie-up aligns with its sustainability management agenda, which includes contributing to a more prosperous society through technological innovation. The company also said its five-year management plan, called "Sustainable Evolution," identifies business model evolution as a priority and emphasizes collaboration with strategic partners to help solve social issues.
Japan's construction sector has long grappled with an aging workforce and labor constraints, pressures that have increased interest in automation and productivity-enhancing technologies. 3D-printed construction has also attracted attention for potential use in disaster recovery and infrastructure development, in addition to residential applications.
The release did not disclose financial terms of the agreement.
