iWedia says it has delivered a premium TeleOS user experience for Reliance Jio on low-memory hardware, using what the company describes as an advanced Android memory optimization process.
The Lausanne-based software company said the work shows how operators can reduce platform memory requirements without redesigning hardware or sacrificing the TV experience expected from modern smart TV systems.
Memory costs remain a major concern for operators that manage millions of devices, iWedia said. As TV platforms add richer interfaces, more applications, expanded operator features and more demanding system services, operators face pressure to keep costs down while supporting devices that may remain in service for years.
Rather than depend only on higher-memory devices or faster replacement cycles, iWedia said it uses a platform-wide optimization method to reduce Android RAM usage across the software stack. The process includes memory profiling, runtime component analysis, graphics memory optimization, memory-management tuning, service architecture changes and application-level improvements.
The company said the goal is to identify where memory is used, determine which components are essential to the user experience and improve the platform while preserving stability, compliance and responsiveness.
iWedia said operators can achieve memory reductions of 1 gigabyte or more, depending on configuration, while maintaining premium TV experiences. The company said the approach can also create a roadmap for future device generations and extend the value of existing deployments.
“The conventional answer to reducing BOM costs is hardware redesign. Our work demonstrates that software can deliver the same outcome,” said Nikola Teslic, iWedia chief technology officer. “What we achieved through our optimization work with Reliance Jio, a 50% reduction in DRAM requirements, provides OEMs with the flexibility either to reduce BOM costs by adopting a lower-capacity DRAM device with the same pinout, without any hardware redesign, or to reinvest the reclaimed memory into richer user experiences and next-generation features.”
Looking ahead, iWedia said Android DRAM optimization is likely to become more important for telecom and pay TV operators as platforms grow more sophisticated and device lifecycles lengthen.
The company said its platform expertise and Android engineering methods can help operators improve performance across deployed fleets while reducing pressure for premature hardware refresh cycles.
