‘It’s just the principle of the thing’: Driver empties Lexington woman’s Little Free Library Robin Atwell says the incident is the latest in a string in the Kenwick neighborhood LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Robin Atwell says someone took every book from her Little Free Library. Atwell says the incident happened Aug. 22. She says it is the latest in a string of similar incidents in Lexington’s Kenwick neighborhood. Books taken from library Atwell and her boyfriend built the Little Free Library this summer at their Lincoln Avenue home. Atwell says it was meant to share books with neighbors, who could borrow or donate books. “It’s frustrating because there was maybe five dollars’ worth of books - you know? You don’t get much if you try to sell them at half price or whatever. It’s just the principle of the thing,” Atwell said. Atwell says she was in her yard the weekend before last when a man driving a gray Toyota Tundra pulled up and began loading the books into his truck. “He pulled up very fast. Jumped out. He parked right here. Going the wrong way. He jumped out and he started pulling all the books out. So, I ran up to the fence, and I called him out on it - I said, ‘dude, what are you doing,’” Atwell said. Confrontation at the fence Atwell says she ran to the fence to try to stop the man and received a cold response. “I said you are welcome to take one or two but don’t take all of them. What are you doing? He laughed at me and proceeded to say it’s not illegal,” Atwell said. Atwell says the confrontation escalated as her boyfriend exchanged words with the man before the truck drove away. Atwell says neighbors have already begun refilling the shelves of her Little Free Library. “It’s wonderful to be able to see someone take a book because you know that you are giving back and sharing these stories - you know,” Atwell said. Atwell says around the same time as the incident at her Little Free Library, neighbors found adult material in other Little Free Libraries in the neighborhood. Copyright 2026 WKYT.
