Is IT-OT Convergence Creating More Risk Than Value?
CS4CA Europe Summit Speakers From Roche, BP and Royal Mail on Convergence Risks
IT-OT convergence, AI and cloud connectivity are giving organizations unprecedented access to data, automation and operational insight. But that same connectivity is also exposing legacy systems, creating new attack paths and introducing complexity that security and operational teams may not fully understand. The question facing organizations is no longer whether IT and OT should converge, but whether they are connecting systems faster than they can secure them.

Michel Harthoorn, OT programme manager at bp; Jonathan Sinclair, head of cybersecurity for pharma technical operations at Roche; and Matt White, cyber advisory and app security director at Royal Mail convened ahead of the CS4CA Europe summit, scheduled for Sept. 23-24 in London, to address a pressing question: Is IT-OT convergence creating more risk than value? Panelists say convergence can deliver significant operational value, but only when organizations understand what they are connecting, why they are connecting it, and whether they have the governance, skills and security controls to support it.
"The risk in my view comes in from where the company is accelerating faster than the capability actually manages," White said. "And just connecting especially old legacy systems into something just because you can, it doesn't mean that you should." The space between ambition and capability is where most convergence risk originates, panelists said.
In this video interview with ISMG, Harthoorn, Sinclair and White also discussed:
- How integrating legacy OT systems with cloud connectivity and modern protocols can expose security gaps that organizations may not fully understand;
- Why the skills and cultural gap between IT and OT teams makes it difficult to find people who understand both domains;
- How AI adoption and user-developed applications are accelerating data exposure and creating new resilience challenges in manufacturing.
Harthoorn oversees process control network support, projects, planning and work prioritization, ensuring high-availability networks and application infrastructure. His expertise spans plant information networks and facility, laboratory and utility systems.
Sinclair leads cyber resilience across pharmaceutical technical operations, aligning security with business goals and operational resilience. He has more than 15 years of cybersecurity experience, including senior security roles at SOPHiA GENETICS, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novartis.
White leads technology strategy, governance and transformation across large-scale IT and OT environments. He has more than 15 years of cybersecurity experience, including senior roles at Arriva, Chanel, Allianz, Deloitte and KPMG.
