Irish widow receives €25m compensation for refugee worker's plane crash death
Naoise Connolly Ryan took Boeing to court, to fight for justice for Michael Ryan
The family of an Irish man who devoted his life to helping people in some of the most difficult and dangerous places in the world have received millions of dollars in compensation for his death.
Micheál 'Mick' Ryan was working for the United Nations when the Ethiopian Airlines flight he was on crashed in 2019. The plane was a Boeing 737, and the company has admitted to failures that led to two crashes in 2018 and 2019 that claimed 346 lives. Mick Ryan was originally from Lahinch in Co Clare but had lived in Cork with his wife and two children for many years.
Most of the families of those lost had already settled with the aeroplane manufacturer, but this civil suit was brought against Boeing by Naoise Connolly Ryan, Mick's widow, who was determined to hold Boeing to account in a US court, reports CorkBeo.
And a jury in Chicago has now awarded $29 million (€25 million) in damages to Mrs Ryan, seven years after the Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 people on board.
Mick Ryan had worked across Africa and Asia, including during the Ebola crisis in Liberia and with Rohingya refugees. Aged 39, he had also worked with refugees in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Ethiopia.
His widow was described by her US attorney as being "committed to seeking accountability and justice from a jury and not accepting money from Boeing directly".
The Boeing corporation has apologised for the crashes and admitted that anti-stall software was implicated in both incidents.

In May, a Chicago jury awarded $49.5m in damages to the family of Samya Stumo, a 24-year-old American who was killed on the same flight, which was bound for the Kenyan capital of Nairobi when it went down near the town of Bishoftu, 50km southeast of Addis Ababa.
The airline's chief executive said the pilot, who had an "excellent flying record", reported difficulties and had been cleared to turn back. The plane was just a few months old, having taken its first flight at the end of October of that year.
