Listen to this story rts and Entertainment Reporter Charlie Thomas shares an interview with playwright Steve Stajich, Director of the play ‘Larry’s Back” coming to the Theatre 29 stage September 11 - 13. 0:00 / 0:00 Theatre 29’s 2026-27 season begins with an original play, “Larry’s Back”, playing a one weekend limited run this weekend, September 11-13.  I got a chance to talk with the author, Steve Stajich.  During that interview, when asked about his background, Mr Stajich said, “A couple of things that I’m proud of, I wrote for Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” for Public Radio. And so I got to work on sitcoms and television shows. And I was..I very much enjoyed writing for smart, funny actors who could execute the material. One of the best experiences of that was when I wrote for Reba McIntyre, the singer, for her television series “Reba.” When asked about his early original work, he relayed early tours of his play “Mekong Joe” that played to critical acclaim in Denver, “When that happened, I was very excited because I thought, ‘Well there..there’s the sign I’ve been looking for. There’s…there’s the signal from up above that I should continue to try to write things for theatre.” When asked how he discovered Twentynine Palms, he shared that his partner, Joan, was doing a project with Noah Purifoy as well as putting together a comprehensive interview with the Morongo Basin legend. “We came out here and, in the course of meeting Noah and seeing his art park in 29 and hanging around the desert as we did to complete that project. That’s how we kinda came to fall in love with the desert.”  The Plot of “Larry’s Back” is based on a true story. According to the author, the real life scenario was rife for a staged version, “But that’s the stuff of theatre. You, you either have the experience yourself, you have the experience amongst your loved ones and your family. You have it with friends. And then you think to yourself, ‘I should tell that story, and share that story with other people. In it, that becomes…theatre”. When asked what he hopes audiences will get from the story, he didn’t want to spoil the magic, saying “Come see it for yourselves!”  Tickets for this captivating show are available at theatre29.org. Theatre 29’s upcoming season is generously supported by a grant from Visit 29, ensuring a vibrant and engaging year of theatrical excellence.
