Increase in callouts for County Roscommon's fire service There was a significant increase in the number of fires in County Roscommon last year, with one person dying as a result of a fire incident, according to information from the Department of Local Government. In 2025, County Roscommon Fire Service saw a total of 172 fire callouts, with 13 of them outside the county. This is significantly up on the 2024 figures when 122 fire incidents were recorded. In contrast to the other years, there were 63 reports of bog, forest or grass fires, and this accounted for the overall increase. Chimney fires accounted for the second largest number of incidents with 23, followed by 20 other types of house fire. There were four fires in ‘apartments, flats, and bedsits’, and one in ‘caravans/mobile homes’. There were three fires at factories, and one at a storage building/warehouse. There was also one fire at a shop or supermarket last year. In terms of causes, most, 23, of these fires were caused by hot ashes, nine from burning rubbish, six from electrical equipment, and two were started maliciously. Most,124, were recorded as ‘unknown cause’, and there were no fires recorded as being caused by matches, cigarettes or lighters. In 2025, the Roscommon Fire Service responded to 79 road traffic accidents, a decrease of one from the 2024 figures, and three malicious false callouts over the 12 months. This is a significant decrease in the 54 malicious false alarm callouts in 2024. Nationally, fire deaths rose to 34 last year, with smoking in the home the leading known cause of fire fatalities. The total number of fire fatalities is up from 25 fire related deaths recorded in 2024, the department said. “The average age of people who died in a fire in 2025 was 63, with 40% of those who died aged over 65. Males were disproportionately represented, accounting for 26 of the 34 people who died in fires,” the department continued. “Older people, those living alone, and their families are being encouraged to review fire safety in the home and seek support where needed.” Around the country, fire brigades attended 21,794 fires in 2025, of which 4,131 occurred in people’s homes. Outdoor rubbish burning was the most common incident type, accounting for 6,778 Fire Service attendances. Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD said the data was an important reminder of the very real risks that fire poses to people and communities. “Tragically, behind these statistics are lives that have been lost and bereaved families. My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones as a result of fires, and I extend my deepest sympathies to them," he said. He also expressed his gratitude to the country’s fire services National Director for Fire and Emergency Management, Keith Leonard, said smoke alarms remain the single most important life-saving device in the home. “While many homes are equipped with alarms, it is essential that they are properly maintained and regularly tested to ensure they operate effectively when needed,” he said. In Ireland, outdoor rubbish burning is illegal under waste management Regulations, breaking these rules could lead up to fines of €5,000 or prosecution. Forest, bog and grass fires represented a significant category of incidents in 2025, with fire brigades attending 2,314 such fires during the year. Mr Leonard said: “This highlights the importance of responsible land management and public awareness, as many wildfires can be prevented through proper care, adherence to fire safety guidance, and the avoidance of activities that may inadvertently ignite vegetation.”
