Immaks, the hydrogen technologies brand of Aksa Composites (Ankara, Turkey), has successfully burst-tested its Type 4 composite hydrogen storage vessel beyond 1,400 bar, a milestone the company says strengthens its case for UN ECE R134 certification, targeted for 2027.
Based on Ankara, Immaks builds its Type 4 high-pressure vessels around a polymer liner and a carbon fiber composite overwrap, manufactured through an in-house process that covers boss manufacturing, liner production, filament winding, curing and pressure testing. Full technical specifications are available at the Immaks website.
“Hydrogen is the future, and we intend to build that future on a foundation of cost-efficiency and supply chain trustworthiness,” says Abdullah Ocak, general manager, Aksa Composites. “Carbon fiber is the most expensive part of any hydrogen tank, and ours comes from our sister company, Aksa Carbon. That keeps us cost-competitive and gives our customers a level of supply chain trust that’s hard to match.”
As a brand of Aksa Composites, Immaks draws on an aerospace-grade manufacturing base, applying the same engineering discipline and quality control standards used in composite structures and machining for aerospace to the development of its hydrogen vessels. Its carbon fiber, meanwhile, comes from Aksa Carbon, which operates from an integrated production base in Yalova, Turkey, giving Immaks a direct line to raw material rather than a reliance on the global carbon fiber spot market.
The result also marks a step forward for Turkey’s hydrogen storage capability as Immaks works to build an integrated supply chain — from carbon fiber production through finished, certified vessel — for a market that has so far relied heavily on imported Type 4 tank technology.
Immaks is now working toward UN ECE R134 certification while scaling its production capacity for target markets including heavy-duty trucks, hydrogen-powered buses, stationary storage and maritime applications.
