IGNOU запустила ускоренные программы магистратуры на один год для выпускников четырехлетних бакалавриатов

Vishal Katoch | Posted August 26, 2026 09:00 AM To eliminate redundant coursework and let graduates move faster into jobs, research, or a PhD, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched nine new one-year master's degree programmes for graduates of Four-Year Undergraduate Programmes (FYUP). Rolled out in August this year, it marks the first time the university is offering an accelerated postgraduate pathway in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. Spanning English, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, History, Economics, Sociology, Commerce, and Journalism and Mass Communication, the courses allow students to deepen their subject expertise in a shorter timeframe without diluting academic rigour. The shift aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, moving away from the conventional 3+2 higher education model. Since FYUP students are already exposed to advanced modules, specialised learning, and research methodology in their fourth year, enrolling in a traditional two-year master’s would often mean revisiting familiar ground. Each programme carries 40 credits, against 80 credits for IGNOU’s existing two-year master's programmes, and follows an annual, rather than semester-wise, term-end examination system. Programme coordinators describe two admission pathways, built around a student's undergraduate research background. Students who completed their four-year degree without a research component join an ‘Honours without Research’ track, which requires a 12-credit dissertation alongside supporting coursework, while those who already completed research at the undergraduate level join an ‘Honours with Research’ track, made up entirely of 40 credits of coursework with no fresh dissertation. Subject-Specific Choices Individual departments have built subject-specific electives onto this shared 40-credit frame. In History, “The 40 credits are split across two semesters of 20 credits each,” says Prof Mayank Kumar, coordinator, one-year MA History. Economics requires “Four compulsory courses in the first semester, followed by a choice of specialisation from data analytics, insurance and finance, or social policy,” says Prof Vijeta Banwari, coordinator, MA Economics. In Urdu, the coursework spans “The Ghazal, Nazm, women's contribution to Urdu literature, fiction and non-fiction, and literary criticism, with electives drawn from two groups,” says Prof Liaqat Ali, coordinator, MA Urdu. “The MA Urdu is a 40-credit PG programme, offering two academic pathways, honours with research and honours without research,” Prof Ali adds. The structure of the one-year MA in Sanskrit offers “Separate course combinations for each entry pathway, drawing on papers such as Sanskrit literary theory and literature, Nyaya-Vedanta-Samkhya-Mimamsa philosophy, linguistics and translation, and options in Buddhist and Jain studies,” say Prof Pushpa and Prof Asheesh Kumar, programme coordinators, MA Sanskrit. English offers grouped electives besides its dissertation and research methodology courses, along with an assessment split of 30% internal assignments and 70% term-end examination. “The MA English (One Year) programme is offered through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode and comprises 40 credits,” says Prof Mridula Rashmi Kindo, coordinator, MA English. The one-year M Com programme is designed specifically for candidates holding a four-year Bachelor's degree (Honours) under FYUP from a recognised institution. “MCom carries 40 credits and can be completed in a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. The medium of instruction is English and Hindi. The programme is designed to provide accelerated learning in core commerce domains and develop advanced commerce competency, along with analytical, numerical and logical reasoning skills required for higher-level decision-making in corporate and academic environments,” says Prof Anupriya Pandey, the programme's coordinator. The one-year master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication is offered in both English and Hindi medium, and is open to any four-year B.A. degree holder with honours or honours with research, say Prof Shikha Rai and Prof Amit Kumar, coordinators, Journalism and Mass Communication. Wider Eligibility IGNOU offers Bachelor of Arts degrees under the FYUP in all nine of these disciplines, alongside 25 FYUP programmes in total. These include BA (English), BA (Hindi), BA (Sanskrit), BA (Urdu), BA (History), BA (Economics), BA (Philosophy), BA (Political Science), BA (Public Administration), BA (Sociology), BA (Journalism and Digital Media), BCom, and several BSc streams, among others. Crucially, admission to the new one-year master's route is not limited to IGNOU's own graduates. Any student who has completed a four-year undergraduate degree under FYUP, at IGNOU or any other recognised institution, is eligible to apply. Following the announcement of the programmes on 10 August, early student uptake has been promising. Coordinators say the university has already recorded 231 enrolments in MA Economics, 166 in MA History, and 141 in MA Sociology. Employment To Academia Beyond saving time, the accelerated framework offers clear career and academic advantages. For students eager to enter the job market, the shorter pathway provides a postgraduate qualification sooner, directly boosting their early employability. Academically, the qualification also serves as a direct bridge to doctoral research. The framework also acts as a vital lifeline for students whose undergraduate degrees lacked a research component. “A student who did not complete a dissertation in the fourth year of the FYUP gets a second opportunity to undertake research through the one-year master's," says Prof Pushpa.
