Ice Cube Gets His Own Permanent Sculpture In Richmond
Ice Cube just got immortalized in ceramic form at one of the country’s most prestigious art institutions, and it’s way more significant than just another sculpture sitting in a museum.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond officially added “Roundel with Boy from the Hood” to its permanent collection, marking a major moment in which Hip-Hop culture is recognized as legitimate fine art.
This isn’t some random piece either. Artist Roberto Lugo, a Philadelphia-based potter and poet, created this ceramic work by reimagining the classical Italian Renaissance roundel tradition and replacing those old European subjects with Ice Cube’s iconic image from the N.W.A. era.
The sculpture depicts Ice Cube wearing his signature black Compton snapback and black shirt, directly referencing the aesthetic that defined N.W.A.’s 1988 album Straight Outta Compton.

Lugo drew inspiration from the Della Robbia family’s Renaissance ceramic work, but instead of religious figures or nobility, he put a Hip-Hop legend front and center.
The piece celebrates Ice Cube’s pioneering contributions to rap and honors the cultural impact of N.W.A., whose music confronted racism, poverty, and police brutality with an honesty that hadn’t been heard in mainstream music before.
According to WRIC, Alisa Chiles, the museum’s curator of decorative arts, explained that Ice Cube’s image from that period has become iconic, representing the moment when Hip-Hop emerged as a powerful political and social force in American culture.
What makes this acquisition even more meaningful is the context surrounding it.
The roundel previously appeared at New York’s R and Company gallery in 2023 and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in 2025, building its exhibition history before landing in Richmond.
The VMFA’s decision to add this piece to its permanent collection signals a shift in how major institutions are valuing Hip-Hop as a legitimate artistic and cultural movement.
This acquisition is part of a massive expansion where the museum added over 3,000 works of art, purchasing more than 800 pieces and receiving 2,506 gifts from over 50 donors.
The museum’s recent announcement of acquisitions highlighted how contemporary artists like Lugo are bridging classical traditions and modern cultural icons.
The piece sits now in the Cochrane Atrium Featured Acquisitions Niche, where visitors can experience how Hip-Hop’s visual language and cultural significance have earned their place alongside centuries of European artistic tradition.
