Ветеран армии Хейди Маккомбер названа героем родного города за многолетнюю благотворительность

Hughes & Coleman Hometown Hero: Heidi Macomber Heidi Macomber has volunteered with veterans groups, school supply drives and more BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Retired Army soldier, Heidi Macomber, has spent years volunteering with organizations ranging from veterans advocacy groups to school supply drives — and she says she has no plans to stop. Macomber served in the Army while also volunteering with Stuff the Bus, South Warren Band Boosters and Rolling Thunder, a veterans advocacy group focused on prisoners of war, those missing in action and veterans in need. ‘I just like to wake up every day and be the best version of myself’ When asked why she dedicates so much of her time to others, Macomber said the answer is straightforward. “Honestly, I wish I could do more,” Macomber said. “But I do what I do because I just like to wake up every day and be the best version of myself that I can be. We live in troubled times. A lot of people live a hard life. And sometimes it’s just easier when there’s somebody there to help you.” Tim Centers, who has known Macomber for more than 15 years, said he only came to understand the full scope of her work well into their friendship. “She sacrifices all of her time,” Centers said. “I’ve told her before that I think she must be a magician because I have no idea where she found time.” Plans to keep serving Macomber said retirement has not slowed her down. She plans to continue her work with Rolling Thunder and is looking for additional opportunities to serve, including volunteering with veterans homes and the Humane Society. “Just doing everything that I can do, you know, just to make somebody’s day better,” Macomber said. “Because we never know what, like, the person standing to us is going through.” Macomber said being named a hometown hero caught her off guard, adding that she is more comfortable standing in the back of a room than being put on a pedestal. Centers, who nominated her for the recognition, said his reasons were clear. “I appreciate her very much, and she is my hero,” Centers said. Copyright 2026 WBKO. All rights reserved.
