How to Watch the Classic Sitcom Sanford & Son The sitcom that made Redd Foxx a household name and gave us a theme song for the ages can be found on Peacock. If you grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, there’s a good chance you spent plenty of quality time with junk dealer Fred G. Sanford (Redd Foxx) and his son Lamont (Demond Wilson) watching them hilariously roast one another on the NBC sitcom, Sanford & Son. A comedy hit from 1972 to 1977, Sanford & Son has since become a cultural classic — with an all-time banger of a Quincy Jones composed theme song — that's still streamable today. A multi-camera sitcom, Sanford & Son was adapted for American audiences by executive producers Bud Yorkin and an uncredited Norman Lear from the British comedy, Steptoe and Son. The sitcom was standup comedian Redd Foxx's first television series. He embodied the elder Sanford as the curmudgeon owner of a local Watts junkyard in Los Angeles, California. Where Fred was audacious and loud, his son Lamont — or ‘dummy’ as Fred relentlessly called him — was the peacemaker, constantly frustrated by the blow-hard tactics of his aging father. A landmark series that opened the door for Black comedies to be both socially topical and centered on their communities, Sanford & Son is still remembered for its ensemble of characters and Foxx's star-making performance over six seasons. The streaming service is the home for other classic fan-favorite comedies like Good Times, The Carol Burnett Show, and Martin. When and where did Sanford & Son originally air? Sanford & Son aired for six seasons on NBC from 1972 to 1977. Can I watch Sanford & Son live? No. Sanford & Son’s original run ended on March 25, 1977 with the episode, "School Daze.” The sitcom aired on Friday nights for the majority of its run, and proved that comedies could thrive on the “death slot” weeknight that usually failed to pull in solid television ratings. Though the series concluded with Fred and Lamont still feisty and feuding, what many may not remember is that the series and characters proved to be so popular that two spin-off NBC series were made, Grady (1976) and Sanford Arms (1977). Both ultimately only lasted a season each, though. RELATED: Seinfeld's Finale Episode Aired on This Day in 1998: See Behind-the-Scenes Photos How many episodes are in Sanford & Son?
