The two-part documentary series initially aired on ITV last year. Its synopsis reads: “Follows detectives as they reinvestigate a brutal murder from over 40 years ago. Brutally murdered in the storeroom of her corner shop in 1981, Carol Morgan's murder was one of the most horrific crime scenes detectives had ever seen, but the murderer was never found. ‌ “Filmed over six years with full access to the police investigation, the programme follows the detectives as they bring one of the most intractable murder cases from the past to justice. On August 13, 1981, Carol Morgan, a 36-year-old mother of two, was found bludgeoned inside the Bedfordshire, England, shop she ran with her husband, Allen Morgan. Police initially believed she was the victim of a burglary gone wrong. ‌ Authorities ruled Allen out as a suspect because he had an alibi for the night his wife was killed. There was insufficient evidence to charge anyone in the case. Allen told authorities he had taken Carol’s two children to a movie theater before he found his wife’s body in the storeroom of the shop. In 2018, the unsolved murder was re-examined by a cold case police team. It soon emerged that Allen was closer to the case than they initially believed. Jane Bunting, a witness who was a teenager at the time, said that Allen had asked her if she knew anyone he could hire to kill his wife. ‌ Allen was taken into custody on allegations that he conspired to kill his wife and paid a hitman to carry out the murder. During his trial, prosecutors argued that Allen, who was having an affair at the time with Margaret Spooner, would be free to start a new life and would also benefit financially from his wife’s death. In July 2024, Allen, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 22 years after being convicted of conspiracy to murder in Luton Crown Court. Senior Crown Prosecutor Shan Saunders said in the statement at the time: "This has been a complex and unusual case, not least because it dates back over 40 years. Carol’s killer has never been identified, despite witnesses claiming to have seen a man with ‘pig-like nostrils’ leaving the scene of the crime.
