Защитный чехол за 500 рупий спасет кондиционер от коррозии и утечки фреона в сезон дождей

How a simple Rs 500 rain cover for AC outdoor unit can prevent rusting, gas leaks and help save money this monsoon season A basic rain cover costing around Rs 500 can shield an AC's outdoor unit from monsoon damage, potentially saving thousands of rupees in repairs. Sarthak Singh September 08, 2026 / 13:45 IST Air conditioner owners often skip small preventive measures during monsoon, not realising how much they end up paying for it later. The outdoor unit bears the brunt of the rainy season, exposed to constant moisture, humidity and dust that accelerate rusting and increase the chances of a refrigerant leak. A basic rain cover, typically priced between Rs 300 and Rs 800 depending on the AC's tonnage and cover material, is one of the cheapest ways to prevent this damage. When compared against the cost of repairing a rusted casing or refilling leaked gas, the maths makes a strong case for spending this small amount upfront. How a Rs 500 cover prevents rusting A rain cover works by keeping direct rainfall off the outdoor unit's casing and internal components while still allowing airflow for the compressor to function normally. Rust typically forms when moisture sits on the metal casing and fins for extended periods, and a cover interrupts this cycle by keeping the surface largely dry through the season. Along with the cover, cleaning the fins and coils once a month and checking the drainage pipe for water pooling around the base further reduces the chances of corrosion setting in. A casing replacement for a rusted outdoor unit typically costs anywhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 depending on the AC brand and tonnage, which means a Rs 500 cover pays for itself several times over if it prevents even one such repair. How the same cover helps avoid gas leaks Rust and gas leaks are often connected, since corrosion around the copper coils and joints is one of the leading causes of pinhole leaks that let refrigerant escape slowly over time. By keeping the unit drier during the monsoon, a rain cover indirectly reduces the rate at which these joints corrode. A full gas refill in India typically costs between Rs 2,500 and Rs 4,000 for a 1.5-tonne split AC, and if the leak goes unnoticed long enough to damage the compressor, repair costs can climb to Rs 8,000 or more. Set against a Rs 500 cover, even a single avoided gas refill represents a saving of roughly five to eight times the initial cost. Let's do the money saving maths Looking at the numbers together makes the case clearer. A Rs 500 rain cover, combined with roughly four monthly cleaning sessions across a typical four-month monsoon stretch, adds up to a fairly small annual maintenance effort. Compared against a single casing replacement at Rs 3,500 on average or a gas refill at Rs 3,000, the cover alone offers a potential saving of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 per incident avoided, and that gap widens further if the neglect leads to compressor damage running into Rs 8,000 or beyond. Over a few monsoon seasons, this simple habit can save several thousand rupees in avoided repairs while also keeping the AC's cooling efficiency intact.
