К 1954 году тракторы в США окончательно вытеснили лошадей и мулов в сельском хозяйстве

The Long Transition to Tractor Power The shift from horsepower to tractor power transformed American agriculture, but it was far from an overnight change. For generations, farmers depended on horses and mules to plow fields, pull equipment and perform the heavy work required to produce crops. Even after tractors became increasingly available, many farmers were cautious about making the transition. Several factors slowed the adoption of tractors. One was financing. Purchasing a tractor represented a significant investment, and many farmers were reluctant to take on debt to acquire new machinery. The decision was not simply about buying a machine; it meant making a major financial commitment to a new way of farming. Another challenge was education and training. Farmers already understood how to work with horses and mules. They knew how to care for the animals, harness them and use them efficiently in the field. Tractors introduced an entirely different set of skills. Farmers had to learn not only how to operate the machines, but also how to maintain them. Understanding engines, mechanical systems, repairs and routine maintenance became increasingly important as tractors became a larger part of farm operations. Tractors Gradually Replaced Animal Power The historical record shows just how gradual the transition was. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 1954 Census of Agriculture, tractors had become a dominant source of mechanical power on American farms by the middle of the 20th century. The census reported approximately 4.69 million tractors on U.S. farms in 1954, compared with about 4.1 million horses and mules. That milestone illustrates the enormous change taking place in American agriculture. USDA’s historical summary noted that tractors had increased dramatically from approximately 246,000 in 1920 to nearly 4.7 million in 1954. During the same period, the number of horses and mules on farms fell from more than 25 million in 1920 to roughly 4.1 million by 1954. The transition was driven by improvements in tractor design and usefulness. Early tractors were relatively heavy and crude compared with later models and were initially used primarily for demanding jobs such as plowing, disking, harrowing and threshing. The development of the general-purpose tractor during the 1920s and rubber-tired tractors during the 1930s helped make mechanical power increasingly practical for a wider range of farm operations. Why 1954 Was an Important Turning Point By 1954, the balance between animal power and tractor power had changed dramatically. USDA’s census data show that tractors had finally surpassed horses and mules in number on American farms. The change did not mean that every farm immediately abandoned horses and mules. In fact, the 1954 census still recorded farms that had both tractors and work animals, as well as farms operating with horses or mules but no tractors. Instead, 1954 represented an important milestone in a transition that had been developing for decades. For farmers, moving from animal power to mechanical power meant more than replacing one source of energy with another. It changed the way farms were operated, the skills farmers needed and the amount of land that could be worked with mechanical assistance. A Transformation That Changed American Agriculture The rise of tractors helped reduce the physical demands associated with animal-powered farming and allowed farmers to accomplish heavy fieldwork more efficiently. USDA’s 1954 agricultural summary described mechanical power as having nearly displaced animal power for farming purposes and noted the substantial reduction in the amount of time and effort required for many farm tasks. Yet the transition also serves as a reminder that agricultural innovation does not always happen quickly. Farmers must weigh the cost of new technology, learn how to use it and determine whether the investment makes sense for their individual operations. The move from horses and mules to tractors ultimately became one of the most important technological transformations in American agricultural history. What began as a gradual and sometimes cautious transition eventually reshaped farming across the United States. As Mark Oppold notes in this American Agriculture History Minute, the change from horsepower to tractor power was a long process—but by 1954, tractor power had reached a historic milestone.
