Home ReSource Diverts More Than 140,000 Pounds of Waste at the Western Montana Fair MISSOULA, Mont. — This year's Western Montana Fair reached a new milestone in its efforts to reduce waste, diverting an estimated 140,000 pounds of material from the landfill. Home ReSource said its Green Team and nearly 100 community volunteers helped divert more than 120,000 pounds of compostable material during the fair — twice as much compost as last year. Volunteers and Home ReSource staff contributed more than 800 hours throughout the event, helping fairgoers properly sort their waste and keeping compostable and recyclable materials out of the landfill. Shifts began as early as 7 a.m. and continued until the fair closed each night, with many volunteers returning to work multiple shifts. "This is a huge accomplishment for the Fair and for our community," Home ReSource Program Director Mike Lessard said. "Diverting just over 120,000 pounds of compost is a massive increase over last year, and it shows what is possible when we combine solid planning, committed volunteers, and thousands of fairgoers making the right choice at the bin." Home ReSource has worked for more than a decade to make some of Missoula's largest events more sustainable. The organization said this year's Western Montana Fair also had more food vendors participating in the waste-reduction effort than ever before. Most vendors served food in 100% compostable containers, making it easier for fairgoers to put their waste into compost bins instead of sending it to the landfill. Home ReSource credited the participating vendors, volunteers and thousands of fairgoers with helping the fair reach its latest waste-diversion milestone.
