Nixon Boyd has a warning for all musicians, and pretty much everyone else for that matter: back up your files. Hollerado's guitarist learned this this lesson the hard way, when someone broke into his car and stole his hard drives containing his near-finished solo album. It took him a year to recreate it (not to mention the material he was producing for other artists, which was also gone). "I really had to force myself to work slowly to recover the material I lost, because at times in the studio I was kind of sick of doing it all over again and I felt myself wanting to rush it," he admits to Exclaim! "Since I was self-producing, there was nobody to tell me to take a deep breath and be patient for the right take to happen." Eventually, he pushed through his impatience and got "really close" to what he had made before, even going so far as to record the vocals while sitting down because that's how he'd done it the first time, and adding the odd overdub he hadn't thought of previously. "If anything, the new recordings are a bit tighter and more polished, probably from having had a practice run," he observes wryly. The result is Every Time We Turn a Corner, an insular and introspective album of softly sung folk rock, acting as the tender counterpoint to the power pop he makes with Hollerado. "Trouble of Your Own" has hooks sharp enough hooks to nearly pass for the band, although its clean arpeggios and Beatles-y slide guitar solo (plus Boyd's hushed singing) give it an intimate psych quality. Despite putting out his debut solo album, Boyd will be laying low this summer. The reunited Hollerado will be playing shows, but, for the first time ever, Boyd will be sitting out. A replacement will be filling in as the guitarist spends the summer at the home with his wife, filmmaker and visual artist Anne Douris, who is expecting a child. Even with Boyd on the sidelines, it's a lot more activity than most fans probably expected from Hollerado, who broke up in 2019. "Listening to other awesome rock bands put out amazing records for a few years was really inspiring, and made me want to be part of the conversation again," Boyd says of Hollerado's decision to officially return last year following some scattered reunion shows. "Fontaines D.C., Yard Act, MJ Lenderman, Wet Leg — god, so many bands are pushing things forward, and it just makes me want to play rock music, too." Boyd will be returning to Hollerado's lineup for their fall dates, around which the group will be releasing as-yet-unannounced material. He's also prepping an acoustic version of Every Time We Turn a Corner for release later this year, and is wanting to do some solo dates of his own. But don't worry — he's backed up his latest recordings very thoroughly. "I use a cloud backup system now, and dump everything I'm working on to backup drives much more religiously," he assures me.
