Hillcrest barista to represent South Africa at Starbucks championship in London Updated | By Charis Coleman A Hillcrest barista is preparing to take his coffee skills onto the international stage after being crowned Starbucks South Africa’s 2026 National Champion. Musawenkosi Mosikili, who works at the Starbucks Hillcrest store, will travel to London in September to represent South Africa at the Starbucks EMEA Championship. Mosikili won the national title at the Starbucks Reserve in Melrose Arch in June and will now compete against other champions from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. For Mosikili, who joined Starbucks in 2023, the win is about far more than coffee. “Some of the best moments we get to experience in life are when we feel seen, heard and inspired,” he said. “Through each cup I craft, I have a moment of connection.” A winning drink inspired by his mother Mosikili’s championship drink, the Caramel Comfort Cold Brew, was inspired by his mother and the role she has played in his life. The drink combines cold brew coffee, caramel, chocolate and oat milk cold foam, with each element representing something different about her strength, care and ability to keep the family grounded. “This beverage is basically a picture of my mom,” Mosikili said. “I can’t wait to show the whole world the inspiration behind this South African Champion.” Taking Ubuntu to London Mosikili will travel to Europe ahead of the EMEA Championship, which takes place in London from 16 to 18 September. He says representing South Africa is a milestone that carries a much bigger meaning. “Carrying the flag for South Africa and representing the spirit of Ubuntu is a profound milestone for me,” he said. That sense of community has played an important role in his journey. Mosikili credits mentors, colleagues and previous South African champions with helping him develop his confidence and craft. He says the experience has also changed how he sees his future. “Starbucks gave me a chance when most people had lost hope in me,” he said. “When I faced financial issues while trying to get to university, I thought my life was over. Little did I know that Starbucks had completely different plans for me.” ‘Why not you? Why not now?’ Mosikili’s advice to other young people hoping to grow in their careers is simple. “This journey has proved to me that nothing is truly impossible,” he said. “What feels daunting at first simply needs time and familiarity to master.” He leaves others with three questions: “Why not? Why not you? Why not now?” For the regular customers at the Hillcrest store who have watched his journey, Mosikili’s upcoming trip to London will be a proud KZN moment as he takes a locally built story onto the international stage.
