Her Heart Matters lawn bowling fundraiser returns to Kelowna’s City Park Lawn bowling for her heart Jennifer Monaghan is putting her heart into raising awareness and funds for women’s cardiovascular health. She is hosting the second Her Heart Matters Lawn Bowling Social on July 9 at the Kelowna Lawn Bowling Club in City Park. There will be a silent auction, costumes, a barbecue, refreshments, and a chance to learn about women’s heart health awareness. Last year, 140 people took part in the fun event, which raised nearly $5,000. This year, the proceeds will go to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Spots are filling up fast. You can register here. Monaghan organized the inaugural event last year, just three weeks before she was put on the heart transplant list. She was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy 14 years ago, a disease of the heart muscles, after suffering a stroke. Last October, she underwent a heart transplant, but continues her efforts to raise awareness. “This event is fun, social, and full of energy, but the message behind it is serious,” said Monaghan. “Too many women still do not know their risk, and too many symptoms are missed or dismissed. We want women, and the people who love them, to start talking about heart health now.” The Heart & Stroke Foundation will be on site during Her Heart Matters to introduce a new women’s heart health risk screening tool, giving guests a simple way to learn more about their own risk and start important conversations about prevention and early action. Women’s heart disease continues to be underdiagnosed, undertreated, and under-researched despite the fact that cardiovascular diseases affect one in three women and is the leading killer of Canadian women.
