Henrico Fire determines cause of SwimRVA fire HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) - Henrico fire investigators have closed their investigation into last month’s pool house fire at SwimRVA-North. The Henrico County Division of Fire said the July fire at SwimRVA North originated from an electrical failure in the attic. Investigators found no signs of foul play. “Our fire investigators carried out this work with a great deal of care and precision,” said Deputy Chief Scott Sutton, fire marshal and deputy chief of special operations and compliance. “We are painfully aware that this is the second devastating call for emergency response at this location.” Sutton said investigators were able to rule out any link between the fire and 9-year-old King Overton’s death on June 15. “We can state with certainty that the fire and the previous incident on June 15 when a young boy lost his life — are unrelated,” Sutton said. “There is no evidence of suspicious activity related to this incident.” Because the fire occurred weeks after Overton’s death at the same facility, officials said the case drew significant community attention and prompted a thorough review before releasing findings. “Taking the time, looking at all of the information, making sure we get the right eyes on the scene to make sure we come out with the right answer was the absolute most important thing we did in this case,” Sutton said. Investigators reviewed Ring camera and surveillance footage and spoke with neighbors. Sutton said fire patterns observed at the scene guided their conclusion. “We make sure we get a holistic picture of the scene and everything that occurred that night as part of the investigation. But the damage that we saw, the fire patterns we saw on and around the building is what led us to the correct conclusion,” Sutton said. Officials said SwimRVA cooperated fully throughout the investigation. “They provided any information that we wanted. They provided their camera footage to us. They provided us access to the property multiple times,” Sutton said. Weeks before the fire investigation closed, attorneys for the Overton family inspected the property. Neither the family’s legal team nor SwimRVA responded to requests for comment on the fire’s cause. Sutton acknowledged the weight both events have placed on the community. “Both of those impacted individuals in their own way. And we understand from a community perspective that we’re healing from those. But it’s just the sympathy from our department that these tragedies occurred,” he said. Copyright 2026 WWBT.
