Remembering one of Calgary's most passionate historians September 8 | Duration 1:40 Decorated local historian and former CBC Radio contributor Harry Sanders passed away Sunday at 59 years old.  Sanders was a well-known historian in Calgary and a regular contributor to CBC, including as a columnist for CBC Radio’s The Homestretch as "Harry the Historian" from 2006 to 2009. Sanders was born in Drumheller, Alta., in 1966, where his parents owned a historic motel. According to longtime friend and colleague Bob Van Wegen this is where his love of history began.  “I think his love of history started with the love of that hotel and that place,” said Van Wegen on CBC Radio's Calgary Eyeopener. Sanders later moved to and grew up in Calgary, receiving a bachelor of arts in history in 1988.  Jeff Collins, former host of CBC Radio’s The Homestretch, recalled the beginning of Sanders’ work with the CBC as a chance meeting when the old Calgary Herald building downtown auctioned off its gargoyles.  “When they redeveloped the building, they didn't have room for gargoyles in their new building, so they auctioned them off as a benefit to charity,” said Collins. It was at that auction that he met Sanders.  “Harry knew more about gargoyles than anybody we've been able to find,” said Collins. That first story turned into a decades-long relationship.  From there, Sanders would become a regular contributor to CBC, and according to Collins he provided an important service to a growing city brimming with newcomers.  “Here was a guy who could educate us about our past,” said Collins.  Sanders was not only knowledgeable about the province and the city's past, he was passionate, says Van Wegen.  “He loved the work,” said Van Wegen. “He got a thrill out of discovering new things that he could share with the people of Calgary.” Collins says that passion and Sanders' work helped him to better understand Alberta and Albertans.  “That was Harry’s gift: he always saw the people behind the buildings and the artifacts we talked about,” said Collins.   “I don't know if he really appreciated what a big role he played for so many people in Calgary and the Calgary heritage community,” said Van Wegen. “His loss leaves an enormous, Harry-shaped crater in Calgary.” Both Collins and Van Wegen say beyond his historical work, Sanders was a generous friend who thought about the people around him.  Sanders published books about the province and received several honours for his work, including being named the Calgary Heritage Authority’s 2012 Historian Laureate, the Calgary Award for Heritage in 2015, and the Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022.  Corrections and clarifications · Submit a news tip ·
