Hannaford parent company expands digital coupon access at sister stores, but not in Maine PORTLAND (WGME) -- Hannaford’s parent company is expanding access to digital coupons at some of its supermarket chains, but the company says it has no plans to bring similar technology to Hannaford stores in Maine. Ahold Delhaize recently introduced “Savings Stations” at Giant Food stores in Maryland and Washington, D.C. The in-store kiosks allow shoppers to load digital coupons and other offers directly to their loyalty accounts using their phone numbers, without needing a smartphone, app or internet access. The company also installed similar stations at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts several years ago. Consumer advocates have raised concerns as retailers increasingly replace paper coupons with digital offers, arguing that shoppers without smartphones, computers or reliable internet access can end up paying more for the same products. The issue can be especially challenging for older shoppers. "We're concerned that seniors, poor people, those who are not digitally savvy, are missing out on these discounts at the worst possible time,” Edgar Dworsky, the founder of ConsumerWorld.org, told the CBS13 I-Team in 2024. "If you're paying a dollar extra for this, $1 more for that, $2 more for that. It adds up." Despite those concerns, Hannaford said the chain had no plans to change it's current My Hannford Rewards Program or install the kiosks at its Maine stores. A spokesperson writing in a statement: Hannaford is committed to providing shoppers with fresh, high-quality items at everyday low prices. We want shoppers to get the best possible value in our stores, and encourage them to use coupons when shopping with us. We accept valid manufacturer coupons presented at the register, as well as personalized coupons generated at time of purchase. Additionally, our weekly flyer highlights current savings and promotions available to all shoppers without a coupon or loyalty account. My Hannaford Rewards, our customer loyalty program, does not require smartphone technology or an app for enrollment or utilization. While all Hannaford customers have access to the same everyday prices in our stores, My Hannaford Rewards offers additional savings for those who choose to use the program. Customers simply need access to a computer to log into their account and clip digital coupons, which are saved directly to the account linked to their phone number and email address. In fact, printing a coupon requires greater access to technology than My Hannaford Rewards does. Embracing this technology allows us to deliver even greater value to our customers through personalized offers based on the items they purchase the most. Digital coupons also help eliminate fraud, and allow us to source even more savings and special offers from our suppliers and vendors. Hannaford provided the I-Team with the same statement when asked about the issue multiple times over the past few years. Shaw’s supermarkets also does not offer in-store coupon kiosks. However, the company says customers who do not have digital access can ask a cashier to have eligible "digital only" discounts applied.
