Guarding your home against drought and grass fires ROGERSVILLE, Mo. (KY3) -Logan-Rogersville fire officials and neighbors share simple steps to keep your lawn safe during extreme heat. Extreme heat and drought are more than just a threat to a green lawn—they can actually put your home and family at risk. As hot, dry conditions continue, local fire officials and homeowners are sharing key steps you can take to prevent accidental grass fires from threatening your property. Maintaining moisture in your yard is a critical first line of defense. Rogersville homeowners shared their daily routines for keeping their lawns healthy and safe. Watering in the morning: Homeowner Alexis Mullen notes that watering for at least 10 minutes every morning is highly effective. “Just make sure we’re watering the grass every morning for at least 10 minutes. It says it’s best to do it in the mornings rather than at night,” said Mullen. Be consistent: Homeowner Chase Wilson warns how quickly lawns can dry out. “We stopped for one day, and it’s halfway dead already,” Wilson said. Chief Richard Stirts of the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District recommends walking around your property to keep grass cut short directly adjacent to your house, pull away dead leaves and weeds from your foundation, and clear any creeping vines or summer weeds growing underneath your siding. Even with precautions, accidental fires can happen. Chief Stirts encourages all residents to have a fire extinguisher easily accessible in their garage or near the yard so they can act quickly if a grass fire sparks.
