Flip’s journey into the spotlight wasn’t through traditional means. He was a neighborhood fixture on Buffalo’s East Side, known for his freestyle abilities and magnetic presence despite battling addiction. Westside Gunn discovered him not as a polished artist but as a real person living through real struggles, and that authenticity became central to Griselda’s entire visual and cultural identity. Flip appeared on multiple projects, from the 10 album cover to features in videos like “Super Kick Party,” where his energy and rawness captivated audiences worldwide. The relationship between Gunn and Flip transcended typical artist-collaborator dynamics. Gunn consistently showed up for his friend in ways that went beyond studio sessions and photo shoots. “I love FLIP and nobody in this world wants him to shine more than me,” Gunn stated, emphasizing his commitment to supporting Flip through his personal battles. “ANY time I’m in Buffalo I pull right up on flip in the hood and hang with him for a min.” When Flip overdosed in December 2022, Gunn publicly defended him against critics, explaining the complexities of addiction and the importance of community support. Gunn’s advocacy for Flip extended to real action. He took Flip to Miami for Art Basel, featured him on tracks, and consistently reminded the world that Flip was more than a meme or aesthetic choice. “FLIP is MY homie y’all don’t know him or his situation so all of that why don’t u help him shit don’t u think I try and help that man every single chance I get,” Gunn wrote, pushing back against those who questioned his commitment. Flip’s presence on Griselda Records’ most celebrated projects made him an integral part of the label’s identity as it rose to prominence. His final appearance came on Westside Gunn’s 2025 album 12, proving that Gunn’s commitment to featuring and celebrating Flip never wavered.
