Grimsby-born George celebrates his 100th birthday
'I've had a good life, I've had some good friends and good neighbours'
Grimsby resident, George Robinson, has recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Born in the Freeman Street area, he went to work at WH Smiths when he finished school at 15.
At 18, he was mad a Bevin Boy - a young man selected to work in the coal mines during the war. He says that when he came home, there were few jobs, so he worked on the docks as a Barrow Boy - a physically demanding laborers job which saw him fill cases full of fish and push them to the trains.
He stayed in this role until he was 25 and then went on to join Marks & Spencer when it was on Freeman Street. He was at that store until it closed and then transferred to Victoria Street where he became head storeman and stayed for 40 years until he retired.
Reflecting on his career, George said: "I've always been fairly well, I've been very lucky, I was at M&S for 40 years - nearly all my working life. Freeman Street was such a busy street, when we opened in the morning there was always a queue waiting to come in, particularly towards Christmas, they'd nearly knock me over when I opened the door.
George was married for 72 years to his beloved wife Elsie and they have a son Paul Robinson. In his spare time, he sang with the Grimsby Orpheus male choir for many years.
He said a highlight for him was when he sang with Shirley Bassey. He performed with between 8,000-10,000 men from all over the country at Cardiff Arms Park with Shirley as guest singer. "It was such a memorable day," he said. "I've always enjoyed singing and dancing."

Marks and Spencer sent him a box of gifts as well as his card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla. Surrounded by friends and family, he celebrated his milestone birthday and said: "I've had a good life, I've had some good friends and good neighbours."
Throughout August Stallingborough Lodge have been doing a marathon sponsored walk to raise money for the residents fund. George has helped complete this by taking part in the final mile. He is fondly known at Stallingborough Lodge as a real gentleman with bags of character.
