The Greenville County Museum of Art (GCMA) has announced that five paintings and drawings from its renowned collection of works by William H. Johnson (1901–1970) will be featured in a landmark exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Opening September 19, 2027, and continuing through January 22, 2028, William H. Johnson will be the artist's first monographic exhibition in New York City since 1957. Co-organized by Esther Adler, curator, Department of Drawings and Prints, and Sarah Suzuki, associate director at MoMA, the exhibition will present the full breadth of Johnson's extraordinary career while placing his work within the broader context of international modern art. Following an in-depth study of GCMA's holdings, MoMA selected five works from the Museum's collection to illustrate Johnson's artistic development during his Scandinavian years, one of the most significant periods of his career. In its loan request, MoMA described the Greenville County Museum of Art's Johnson collection as "remarkable," noting that these works are "uniquely suited to demonstrate his artistic development while living in Scandinavia." The museum further praised the collection for its representative examples of Johnson's work from the 1930s, highlighting the exceptional quality of the selected paintings and drawings. William H. Johnson ranks among the most important American artists of the twentieth century. Born in South Carolina in 1901, Johnson rose from humble beginnings to study at the National Academy of Design before traveling extensively throughout Europe. His work absorbed influences from German Expressionism and Scandinavian modernism while remaining deeply connected to his experiences growing up in the American South and later living in Harlem. Although his career was cut short by illness and decades of institutionalization, Johnson has since been recognized as one of America's most original modernist painters.
