Математическое общество Лондона запустило грант до £2000 для поддержки научных мероприятий в Африке

Deadline: 15-Sep-2026 The Mathematics in Africa Grant provides partial financial support for mathematical activities taking place in Africa, including conferences, workshops, and research collaborations. The grant is designed to strengthen mathematical activity across the African continent by supporting collaboration, knowledge exchange, and participation in mathematical events. It enables mathematicians from around the world to organize or participate in activities based in Africa. The maximum grant award is £2,000, with funding supporting eligible travel, accommodation, subsistence, and caring costs for dependents. About the Mathematics in Africa Grant The Mathematics in Africa Grant aims to promote the development of mathematics in Africa by providing targeted financial assistance for mathematical activities and partnerships. The programme supports opportunities for mathematicians to collaborate across borders and strengthen mathematical networks through conferences, workshops, and research activities. Although applicants can be based anywhere in the world, the supported activity must take place within Africa. What Activities Can the Grant Support? The grant can provide partial support for a range of mathematical activities. Eligible activities include: Attending conferences Organizing conferences Attending workshops Organizing workshops Research collaborations These activities should contribute to mathematical activity, collaboration, and development in Africa. What Costs Are Covered? The Mathematics in Africa Grant can support several costs associated with participating in or organizing eligible activities. Supported costs include: Travel expenses Accommodation Subsistence expenses Caring costs for dependents Visa costs are considered part of normal travel expenses and can therefore be included within the relevant travel costs. The maximum available award is £2,000. Maximum Grant Amount Applicants can receive a maximum award of £2,000. Because the grant provides partial support, applicants should consider how the requested funding will contribute to the overall costs of their proposed activity. The budget should focus on eligible expenses directly connected to the supported mathematical activity. Who Can Apply? The programme is open to mathematicians based anywhere in the world, provided that the activity they are seeking support for takes place within Africa. This international eligibility allows mathematicians from different countries to participate in African-based mathematical conferences, workshops, and research collaborations. However, PhD students are not eligible to apply. Where Must the Activity Take Place? The supported activity must take place within Africa. Applicants may be based outside Africa, but the conference, workshop, research collaboration, or other supported mathematical activity must have an African location. Funding for Conferences and Workshops The grant supports both participation in and organization of conferences and workshops. Funding can help cover relevant expenses such as travel, accommodation, subsistence, and caring costs for dependents. The programme also encourages diversity among conference and workshop organizers and participants, helping create broader opportunities for involvement in mathematical activities. Support for Research Collaborations Research collaboration is another important area supported by the grant. Funding can contribute toward eligible expenses associated with mathematical research collaborations taking place in Africa. These collaborations can provide opportunities for mathematicians from different locations to work together, exchange knowledge, and contribute to the development of mathematics across the continent. Encouraging Diversity in Mathematics The Society encourages diversity among conference and workshop organizers and participants. Applicants and organizers should therefore consider how their activities can provide inclusive opportunities for mathematicians from different backgrounds and locations. Supporting diverse participation can contribute to stronger mathematical networks and broader collaboration. How the Grant Is Paid The grant is not paid directly to individual applicants. Instead, grants are paid to the relevant university or institution. The funding is disbursed in two installments: Half of the grant is paid in advance The remaining half is paid after submission of a satisfactory report Applicants should therefore coordinate with their university or institution regarding the administration and receipt of the funding. Reporting Requirement The second installment is released after submission of a satisfactory report. Applicants should therefore maintain appropriate records of their supported activities and prepare a report demonstrating how the grant was used and what was achieved. How to Prepare a Strong Application Applicants should clearly explain the mathematical activity they are seeking support for and demonstrate its relevance to mathematical development and collaboration in Africa. A strong application should clearly describe: The conference, workshop, or research collaboration Where the activity will take place in Africa The applicant’s role in the activity The mathematical focus The expected benefits The costs requiring support Travel and accommodation requirements where applicable Subsistence expenses Caring costs for dependents where applicable Any visa-related travel expenses The overall contribution of the grant to the activity Applicants should ensure that their requested amount remains within the £2,000 maximum award.
