Govanhill becomes first member of domestic abuse alliance
Govanhill Housing Association has become the first member of the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) Scotland, helping to lead the pilot programme that will bring the DAHA Accreditation Framework to Scotland and adapt it to align with Scottish legislation.
The move reflects the Association’s ongoing commitment to supporting tenants experiencing domestic abuse and ensuring survivors can access the help and safety they need.
Over the last two years, Govanhill has strengthened its approach through staff training with Glasgow Women’s Aid, the creation of a Domestic Abuse Staff Working Group, enhancements to their allocations policy to support rapid rehousing, and the development of new procedures and guidance for staff.
Claire McGraw, head of housing and tenancy services, said: “At Govanhill Housing Association, we recognise that in our position as a housing provider, we are often one of the organisations that has the most regular contact with tenants. That gives us a real opportunity to notice when something isn’t right and help people get the support they need.
“We have worked hard over the last few years to embed the right culture to make sure tenants know they will be listened to, believed and supported, and we have taken a number of steps including adapting our allocations policy to make sure that tenants can be rehomed quickly in cases of domestic abuse.
“By joining the Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance, not only will we benefit from their years of specific expertise from working with housing associations across the rest of the UK, but we will also be able to support them to expand into Scotland and adapt to the differences in legislation here.”
Nicki Clarke, head of housing, Standing Together Against Domestic Abuse, added: “On 14 Jul we attended a Westminster event hosted by John Grady MP to mark the introduction of DAHA Accreditation to Scotland. This exciting new development will be led by our senior regional lead, Anna Lock, and begins with a pilot programme to adapt the DAHA framework to Scottish legislation before a wider national rollout.
“The event provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the challenges faced by survivors of domestic abuse and explore how DAHA Accreditation can support housing providers to deliver safer, more effective services.
“We are thrilled to welcome Govanhill Housing Association as our first DAHA Scotland member and a key partner in the pilot programme. We look forward to working together as we begin this important new chapter for DAHA in Scotland.”
