Nebraska Salt and Grain eliminates its semi-truck fleet
An NSG truck Nebraska Salt and Grain eliminates its semi-truck fleet by: George Lauby - Sep. 8, 2026 The Nebraska Salt and Grain trucking company of Gothenburg will no longer operate its own fleet of trucks, the parent company, NSG Logistics, LLC announced. The company was founded in Gothenburg more than 50 years ago, in 1975, and the family-owned business grew to be the largest fleet of hopper-bottom tractor-trailers in Nebraska. NSG truck drivers were told late last week to park their trucks and turn in their keys. The company said it will continue to move freight using a network of owner-operators, as well as some third-party carriers, according to a press announcement. It is not clear how many truck drivers in the Gothenburg area are affected. NSG was founded and operated by Norm Geiken and wife Colleen until 2020, when it was purchased by a Texas company and became NSG Logistics. The company continues to operate in the central states, including Texas and Nebraska. It has expanded over the years beyond hauling grains and salt to hauling products such as ice control, aggregate, dust control and soil stabilization products. In addition to Gothenburg, the company has terminals in four Texas cities — Cleburne, Fort Worth, Kress and Lubbock. The company has “completed a draw-down of its over-the-road tractor fleet,” the press release said. Citing “rapidly changing metrics of the transportation market,” Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Green pointed to the ever-increasing costs of running a fleet of trucks. “We looked hard at the rates available on a lane-by-lane, mile-by-mile basis and compared them to the ever-increasing costs of running a fleet,” Green said. “It became apparent that continuing to run a stand-alone trucking fleet just doesn’t make sense financially, so we’ve stopped running it.” “What we did not stop, and what we will not stop, is ensuring our customers continue to get the same level of service they have come to rely on,” he added. Green said NSG’s terminals remain fully engaged in normal operations. Product sourcing, transloading, and storage services will continue as before, under the same service requirements. He said transloading (moving cargo from one type of transport to another), storage and storage monitoring, are continuing to expand. “The same people are handling the same accounts,” he said. The company also has more than 2 million bushels of on-site grain storage capacity with full-service elevators, the website says. NSG Logisitcs is part of Instar Holdings of Southlake, Texas, which has 80 plus trucks and 225 railcars, plus an operating salt mine in Hutchinson, Kan., according to Instar’s website. Instar Holdings describes itself as “a vertically integrated platform controlling the full commodity supply chain — from what comes out of the ground, through how it’s processed and improved, to how it reaches the customer.” FacebookTweetPinPrintLinkedInEmail © 2026 The North Platte Bulletin.
