Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is beaming back up to the big screen.
Gore Verbinski's filmography shows just how talented a director he is, as well as how he is always trying to come up with creative concepts to surprise audiences on the big screen. With movies like the horror classic The Ring and three fantasy swashbucklers in the form of popular entries in the fan-favorite Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the director has time and again operated on a different level, bringing crowd-pleasing and vibrant movies to life. That is precisely the case of Verbinski's foray into the sci-fi genre, and moviegoers can experience it again on the big screen next week.
On Instagram, the official page for Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die revealed that Gore Verbinski's new R-rated sci-fi movie will return to theaters for a single day on July 16.
The initiative is connected to the date serving as AI Appreciation Day. Given the movie's stance on the topic — a dangerous, world-ending AI is what kickstarts the main character's journey — Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die is returning to theaters on that day to celebrate "an AI *UN-Appreciation Day." There will be a screening in Los Angeles, with a live-streamed Q&A featuring Verbinski, writer Matthew Robinson, and surprise guests, happening right after.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die follows Sam Rockwell's unnamed man from the future as he travels back in time to get help from the patrons of a diner to change a post-apocalyptic future where a powerful AI goes rogue and everything falls apart. According to the man, when he shows up in the film, he is on his 117th attempt to get the right combination of people at the diner to stop the AI that destroyed humanity in the dystopian future. The problem is that the way the man is dressed and behaves does not spark confidence in his story.
Verbinski's Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die was met with overwhelmingly positive reactions by audiences and critics alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the sci-fi comedy stands tall with a strong 81% critics' score based on 232 reviews at the time of writing. As the film's official Instagram account noted in its post announcing Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die's return to theaters, the sci-fi movie earned the coveted Certified Fresh label on the review aggregator. Verbinski's latest release was also a hit with moviegoers, boasting an even better 85% audience score on the platform.
Despite Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die's positive reception, the sci-fi movie ended its theatrical run with just $9.8 million at the box office. Based on the film's reported budget of $20 million, it needed to make between $40 million and $50 million to break even, which means the film lost the studio millions, and many ended up not going to watch it in theaters. Given its positive audience reviews, the sci-fi movie's return to theaters allows moviegoers to finally give Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die a chance.
