Семь поколений семейного бизнеса: как GNH Lumber и Home помогает жителям Катскиллс строить дома уже более века

For generations, GNH Lumber and Home has supplied the materials that have become houses, businesses, and community institutions across the Catskills and Hudson Valley. Its history began more than a century ago, when Truman Ingalls traveled to local woodlots, setting up temporary sawmills and living quarters as he harvested timber. In 1937, Truman’s son Stanley L. Ingalls and James M. Freeman formally established Greenville Norton Hill Lumber Company to sell lumber, building materials, and coal. The company’s first office was located in the kitchen of the Ingalls family home. Today, led by President John Ingalls, GNH operates locations in Greenville and Windham, along with a design showroom in Latham. Much has changed during those decades, from building techniques and materials to the technology used to manage deliveries. GNH has evolved with the industry while retaining its emphasis on knowledgeable, personal service. For Ingalls, the company’s greatest advantage is what he calls “the care factor.” “Our employees are people who live in the communities that we serve,” he says of GNH’s employees. “They know people by their first names and interact with them around town, at the grocery store and the gas station. They build relationships that are generational, both with the company and with the customers.” Those relationships are supported by an experienced staff with relatively little turnover. Employees who have spent a decade or more in the building industry have encountered a wide range of construction challenges, giving them practical knowledge they can apply when advising customers. Some members of the GNH team previously worked as professional builders themselves. That expertise shapes the company’s consultative approach. With contractors, the GNH team can review a project, anticipate material needs, schedule orders, and coordinate deliveries so crews can keep working. The company has also refined its distribution system to reduce the amount of handling materials receive between the supplier and job site, limiting damage while improving safety. Homeowners receive the same planning-oriented assistance. Customers considering a kitchen, bathroom, addition, deck, or other renovation can meet with GNH staff before work begins to discuss goals, budgets, materials, colors, and logistics. Depending on the project, the team can produce renderings and help assemble an order so the necessary materials are ready before demolition starts. “Asking the right questions often gets you into the right realm,” Ingalls says. “We can help prevent you from having the same mistakes happen as others before you.” That advance planning may also give homeowners access to higher-quality, custom-ordered products at prices comparable to items pulled directly from a big-box shelf. The process requires more forethought than waking up on Saturday morning and deciding to tear out the bathroom, but it can spare customers delays, compromises, and expensive reversals. After more than a century, GNH’s work remains grounded in a straightforward idea: A building supplier should do more than sell materials. It should help its neighbors turn plans into places built to last. GNH Lumber and Home operates locations in Greenville and Windham, along with a design showroom in Latham.
