Glasgow council workers 'walk out in tears' as wages to be cut for 'equal pay' Domestic abuse workers, janitors, cleansing staff, park workers and parking attendants say they face financial destitution. Glasgow City Council workers 'burst into tears' after bosses informed them that thousands are to be cut from their wages to create equal pay. Domestic abuse workers, janitors, cleansing staff, park workers and parking attendants say they face financial destitution after the SNP and Greens voted through what one union described as 'devastating' plans to cut the wages of thousands of male and female staff. The group voted to push ahead with the the new 'equal pay' grading system.after the council forked out £770m over claims that jobs which historically attracted female staff were not in line with jobs that attracted male workers. The council has claimed that the new deal will see 63% of those affected gain financially after eight years of negotiations. However, workers in some of the toughest jobs, face massive cuts of up to £11,500. Staff, speaking anonymously over fears for their jobs, say they are livid with many having walked out or burst into tears at the news. One male parking worker told Glasgow Live: "We have just been informed that we will all be losing £3,500 a year from our wages. The staff are livid with many having walked out with stress. "Workplace morale is at an all-time low. We face constant abuse from the public. I have personally been punched, pushed, spat on and screamed at by the public while doing my job. I have had people try to run me over. This is the thanks we get from the council. Utter disgrace. "The council are in for a shock. It's looking like there will be industrial action very soon." The worker continued that they had been informed that care home staff are facing cuts of up to £2,000, low level managers and cleansing are also facing similar cuts. A female worker also said: "My wages are going down by £3,500. I'm a single lady and I can't afford to live with less money. "I will only have £50 left a month after paying my bills. Last year, parking attendants brought in over £26 million to the council and now they want to pay us less.. "The abuse we take in the streets is getting worse every day and now the council are telling us that we don't enforce the parking and that is one of the reasons why our wages have gone down." It is understood that the biggest cuts are to be made to ASSIST domestic abuse advocacy workers that support high risk domestic abuse victims that are going through court. A source says that a significant number of staff in the service went off sick as off Tuesday after being told they will lose £11,500. They said: "Many burst into tears as they would be unable to pay their bills causing many to explore having to sell their homes. Most of the ASSIST staff are women. Many of whom are single parents and/or have previously been victims of DA. "Some staff are a couple of years of retirement but how have to work on due to the reduction in salary and pension. Some workers have spoken to Strathclyde Pension fund and could be losing as much as £40k from their pension pot. "This has a direct impact on the safety of victims awaiting support, safety planning and court outcome as there is less staff available to cover the work. ASSIST covers 14 local authority areas across the West of Scotland and is hosted by GCC but fully funded by Scottish Government. "The other local authority areas were not consulted by GCC on this and staff have been ordered not to share this information with anyone. ASISST It is the largest domestic abuse court advocacy service in the country and has pioneered and supported the implementation of the domestic abuse Scotland act 2018, the Domestic homicide and suicide reviews which have just gone live recently and new national standards for domestic abuse court advocacy." A spokesman said: “Individual information is currently being shared with staff in primary benchmark roles who may face a reduction in earnings. All workers in primary roles will receive personalised information next week. “Clearly, it would not be appropriate for the council to talk about specific roles before staff have received information. Trade unions have been heavily involved in all aspects of the job evaluation process and the design of the new pay and grading scheme. A spokesman said: “As last week’s committee heard, executive roles have not yet been evaluated. It is, very clearly, impossible for anyone to know the outcome of a process that has not even begun. “It has always been recognised that service reform will be required to support the implementation of the new arrangements – including, for example, resolving any hierarchical disruptions.” Get more Daily Record exclusives by signing up for free to Google’s preferred sources.
