Патриция Родни стала стипендиатом фонда JWN Foundation, несмотря на тяжелые жизненные испытания

From Gimme-Me-Bit to greatness Patricia Rodney’s resilience, hope and purpose PATRICIA Rodney grew up in the quiet farming district of Gimme-Me-Bit, Clarendon, where her life was never defined by material wealth. Instead, it was shaped by resilience, faith, hard work, and a community that believed in lifting one another through life’s greatest challenges. Today, the second-year media and communications student at the University of the Commonwealth Caribbean (UCC) is writing a new chapter as a 2025 JWN Foundation Scholar, proving that with determination one can overcome even the most difficult obstacles. Her story is not only one of academic achievement but also of extraordinary perseverance in the face of serious health challenges, financial hardship, and interrupted schooling. “My community taught me that setbacks are never permanent,” Rodney reflects. “Growing up in Gimme-Me-Bit showed me what resilience looks like. I watched neighbours support one another through difficult times, and that shaped my values of gratitude, perseverance and service. It also inspired me to succeed so I can return one day as a beacon of hope for young people in my community,” she added. Rodney’s educational journey began at Gimme-Me-Bit Primary and Infant School where she developed a love for learning and an appreciation for education. She later transitioned to secondary school with dreams of one day attending university. However, those dreams were suddenly threatened during one of the most critical periods of her education. In March 2020, at the beginning of grade 10, Rodney underwent major corrective surgery for scoliosis. The lengthy recovery coincided with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing her to spend nearly two years away from a traditional classroom learning. For many students, such a disruption could have marked the end of their academic ambitions. However, for Rodney it became the beginning of a remarkable display of resilience. “I had to rely on self-discipline and determination. I studied whenever my health allowed, and remained focused on my goal of reaching tertiary education,” she said. She is also quick to acknowledge those who made her recovery possible. “I will always be grateful to the Duncan Tree Foundation. Without their support I would not have been able to access the life-changing surgery that allowed me to continue pursuing my dreams,” she said. Despite missing almost two academic years, Rodney successfully earned six Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate subjects. “My proudest achievement isn’t simply passing my exams. It is knowing that I accomplished that after everything I went through. Those passes represent resilience far more than they represent grades,” she said. Now pursuing a bachelor’s degree in media and communications at UCC, Rodney has found the perfect outlet for her curiosity and passion for storytelling. “I have always been the person who asks questions and wants to understand what’s happening around. Journalism has always felt like my calling because I enjoy breaking down complex issues so people can better understand the world,” she said. Her greatest inspiration is one of Jamaica’s most respected late journalists. “Ms Dorraine Samuels always inspired me. Watching her report the news with such poise, professionalism and grace showed me that journalism is about much more than delivering information. It’s about serving people with integrity and dignity,” she said. Rodney hopes to build a career in broadcast journalism, public relations and content creation, using her voice to amplify stories that are often overlooked. “I want to tell the untold stories of rural Jamaica. Too often communities like mine are overlooked. I want to change that narrative by showing the resilience, brilliance and potential that exist far beyond the city,” she said. Receiving news that she had been selected as a JWN Foundation Scholar remains one of Rodney’s most emotional memories. “When I got the news, I was overwhelmed with shock, gratitude and tears of joy. It felt like someone had finally recognised every challenge my family and I had overcome,” she said. The scholarship is doing much more than covering tuition costs. “It gives me peace of mind. Instead of worrying constantly about how I’m going to pay for school, I can focus on becoming the best student and future media professional that I can be,” she said. While pursuing her studies Rodney remains committed to serving others. She volunteers at Gimme-Me-Bit Primary and Infant School, giving back to the institution that first nurtured her love for learning. She also serves as a peer educator with the Jamaica Family Planning Association, helping to educate and empower young people. These experiences reflect her belief that success carries a responsibility to uplift others. “I have been blessed by so many people throughout my journey; volunteering is one way I can begin giving back,” she said. Rodney’s ambitions extend well beyond graduation. She hopes to complete her degree with honours before launching a successful career as a broadcast journalist or public relations professional. In time she also wants to mentor young people from rural communities, helping them recognise that their circumstances do not define their potential. Reflecting on her journey, Rodney offers words of encouragement to other young people facing challenges of their own. “Whether you’re dealing with health issues, financial struggles or personal setbacks, don’t allow those temporary obstacles to define your future. Lean on your support system, stay focused, and keep believing in yourself,” she ended.
