Ghost caught on camera turns out to be 'ninja' hedgehog rampaging in night A gift shop owner convinced that she had seen a ghost on her CCTV cameras was left bewildered when she realised she had actually captured footage of a "ninja" hedgehog. Rachel Eaton was left shocked after she found a presence had been rampaging around her garden in the Middle overnight on August 25, leaving her 1-metre (3.2ft) tall Buddha statue toppled over. She and her staff at Curiosity Swanage in Swanage, Dorset, were further confused the following day, when they found more sculptures knocked over. After dubbing the incidents "a bit spooky", they decided to comb through the shop's CCTV footage. Ms Eaton said she was stunned to find that the culprit behind the topplings was a single prickly intruder - a female hedgehog who had been running around her shop. • Hedgehogs will keep visiting garden if 1 item is placed outdoors in September • Never leave these foods out for hedgehogs in your garden Video footage posted by the shop owner captured the hedgehog leaping between ceramic planters and scurrying around the shop yard floor. At one point, the mischievous critter runs a little too close to the Buddha statue, sending it teetering before it crashes to the floor. Ms Eaton said she and her staff called in a rescuers to extract the animal from her shop, who affectionately ended up naming the spiky customer "Ghost". She said: "She was nicknamed 'Ghost' by the rescue who came and collected her but she started off as Houdini. The hedgehog was a bit bruised from her Mission Impossible adventure." Ms Eaton added: "We thought it was a bit odd there wasn't more devastation if it was the wind. "It was when we checked the CCTV that we saw Buddha walking itself off the platform. It was a bit spooky. It was the next day we saw the ninja hedgehog. I phoned Dorset Hedgehog Rescue after telling the [shop] girls we couldn't keep her as a pet." Ghost was taken for a check-over where she was found dehydrated and a bit bruised. She has been released for rehabilitation near Dorchester. The rescue came after repeated heatwaves across the UK left the country's hedgehog collection deprived of watering holes, leading many to be handed into centres. Severe dry weather meant that the animals were both unable to drink water and dig for their food - a mix of grubs and other insects - after the ground was baked solid by the sun. Lisa Steward, who runs Thorne Hedgehog Rescue in Ashford, Kent, with a team of volunteers and looks after up to 1,200 hedgehogs a year, said they have seen a surge submitted to care. She told the BBC earlier this summer that those being handed over are baby hoglets whose mums' milk quality has been impacted by the water shortages. "The long hot dry spell has meant that mums are struggling to find food so their milk is of poor quality or it's drying up. We're inundated with hoglets, more than we've ever had before."
