Georgia Downtown Association recognizes Thomasville Published 9:58 am Monday, August 24, 2026 THOMASVILLE — The Georgia Downtown Association (GDA) has recognized the Thomasville Art Walk with its 2026 Outstanding Downtown Promotion Award during the GDA Annual Conference in Rome. The award recognizes exceptional promotional efforts that enhance the image and visibility of a downtown district through innovative campaigns, creative outreach, signature experiences, and meaningful community engagement. Developed by the Thomasville Center for the Arts, the Thomasville Art Walk was recognized for transforming public art, history, and local storytelling into an immersive, year-round downtown experience. More than a walking tour, the Art Walk serves as a sustainable promotional tool that encourages exploration, supports downtown businesses, and strengthens Thomasville’s identity as a vibrant cultural destination. “The most successful downtown promotion efforts are those that create meaningful connections between people and place,” said Jason Ford, president of the Georgia Downtown Association. “The Thomasville Art Walk is a remarkable example of how communities can use creativity, technology, and partnerships to showcase their unique assets while encouraging residents and visitors to experience downtown in new ways. This project demonstrates the power of storytelling and innovation in creating lasting economic and community impact.” As Public Art Director for Thomasville Center for the Arts, Darlene Crosby Taylor conceived and led the Art Walk from concept through implementation, collaborating with graphic designer Jones-Howse to bring the vision to life. Recognizing an opportunity to highlight Thomasville’s creative assets in a new way, Crosby Taylor designed a self-guided experience that combines public art, technology, and storytelling to connect visitors with the community’s history, artists, architecture, and downtown destinations. Funded by a generous grant from the Thomasville Area Board of REALTORS® and the National Association of REALTORS®, the Art Walk invites visitors to explore more than 40 public art assets throughout downtown Thomasville, including murals, bronze sculptures, historic markers and creative installations that reflect the community’s culture, history and creative spirit. Delivered through the AWEgmented app, the self-guided experience allows visitors to explore downtown at their own pace while discovering the stories behind Thomasville’s art and history. Unlike a traditional promotional event that occurs only periodically, the Thomasville Art Walk provides a permanent downtown attraction available year-round. The route guides visitors through a district featuring more than 150 businesses, increasing exposure for local shops, restaurants, attractions, and community destinations. To encourage participation and enhance the visitor experience, the project included a comprehensive branding and marketing campaign featuring printed maps, QR code installations, promotional materials, visitor incentives, and completion rewards. Community engagement also played a key role in the project’s success, including a public call for information that helped identify the previously unknown artist of a historic train mural and generated renewed interest in Thomasville’s public art collection. The Art Walk has already demonstrated measurable success. Within its first five months, the initiative has generated 1,035 AWEgmented app downloads and nearly 600 visits to the Thomasville Center for the Arts website, demonstrating strong community interest and successfully converting digital engagement into downtown exploration. Strategic partnerships with the Thomasville Visitors Center, Thomasville History Center, City of Thomasville, and the award-winning Taste of Thomasville Food Tour have further expanded the project’s reach. Through these collaborations, the Art Walk is featured in visitor resources, promoted through tourism channels, and integrated into experiences that encourage visitors to spend more time exploring downtown. By combining public art, technology, storytelling, and collaboration, the Thomasville Art Walk has become a model for innovative downtown promotion. The project enhances the visibility of local businesses, celebrates community history, support artists, strengthens civic pride, and showcases how creative approaches can transform downtown experiences for residents and visitors alike.
