Gunnar Heinemann has announced his intention to step down from the Supervisory Board of Gebr. Heinemann at the end of this year, marking the end of a long stewardship of the family-owned retailer, which he ran for many years with his brother Claus. Gunnar Heinemann’s son Max Heinemann will join the Supervisory Board as Chairman. Alongside his uncle, Claus Heinemann, they will represent the shareholder family. As a result of the change, Max Heinemann will relinquish his current position as Co-CEO. His fellow CEO Raoul Spanger will also step down to take on the position of Deputy Chairman, in recognition of his long-standing leadership of the company. “With this new structure, we are continuing a transition that we have prepared responsibly and with great respect for the history of our company,” explained Claus Heinemann. “My cousin Gunnar, with whom I have worked in close friendship for decades, has shaped Gebr. Heinemann and, together with me, guided its development into an international player in travel retail. “For this, he deserves our great thanks. At the same time, we are now creating the conditions for the next generation to take on additional responsibility and for Gebr. Heinemann to continue developing with clearly defined roles and unchanged values.” My cousin Gunnar, with whom I have worked in close friendship for decades, has shaped Gebr. Heinemann and, together with me, guided its development into an international player in travel retail. – Claus Heinemann Max Heinemann and Raoul Spanger will be replaced by current Dyson executive Morgan Boeri, who will take over as CEO. He will join the company’s Executive Board alongside Chief Commercial Officer Inken Callsen, Chief Sales Officer Florian Seidel and Chief Financial Officer Dr Kai Deneke. The changes will come into effect on 1 January. Max Heinemann said: “Gebr. Heinemann is a family-owned company with a strong identity and an international player in a dynamic market. For me, this step reflects the responsibility of the shareholder family: from the Supervisory Board, I will help guide the long-term vision of the Heinemann Group, our global expansion, and our ability to innovate. Together with Raoul, Morgan, the Executive Board, and our colleagues across the Group, I look forward to building on that foundation and shaping the next chapter of our company’s development.” The latest development represent the next step in the fifth generation of the Heinemann family, represented by Max Heinemann, taking leadership of the company. Under the guidance of Claus and Gunnar Heinemann, the business has transformed into one of the world’s leading travel retail companies, and was recently listed as the fourth biggest retailer in the world in the DFNI Database & Insights 2026/27. Gunnar Heinemann concluded: “Gebr. Heinemann has been and remains far more than a company to me. Heinemann.” Boeri’s appointment reflects a realigning of the role of the Executive Board of Gebr. Heinemann strong: entrepreneurship, partnership, trust and reliability.” Generational change Gunnar Heinemann has been described as an “entrepreneurial figure”, whose five decades with the company have seen him become both a guiding light and a figurehead for both the business and the Heinemann values. A great proponent of the company’s focus on people – be it customers or employees – his understanding of the importance of long-term relationships and reliable partnerships has been defining for the company over the past half of a century. His willingness to change and innovate has been seen not only in Gebr. Heinemann’s ability to pivot in the face of changes such as the end of intra-EU duty-free, but also in his founding role in the German Travel Retail Association, which he was President of for many years. Alongside his brother Claus, he was the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Frontier Awards.
