Обзор систем очистки воды: от портативных фильтров до УФ-стерилизаторов

Gear review: Water filtration Kimberly Nicoletti Follow Traveling quite a bit this summer, including a foreign country, provided nice opportunities to test these filtration systems — and other ways to stay hydrated. All of these filtration products are third-party tested, certified and of the highest quality. And, with the holiday weekend, some are on sale. Katadyn Explorer Pro Purifier This is simple to set up and disassemble, and the pumping action is smooth and easy. The first-of-its-kind three-stage filtration system employs ceramic microfiltration, activated carbon and virus removal — and you can leave out the virus or carbon filtration, depending on your destination. Overall, it rids water of microplastics, virus, bacteria, protozoa, cysts, sediment, chemicals and foul taste. Depending on water quality and which filter you’re relying on, it filters 10,000 to 20,000 liters, (virus or ceramic, respectively) And, you can store the ceramic and virus filters dry without maintenance or risk of mold. Made in Switzerland under strict quality control, I have peace of mind using the 1.38-pound wonder. katadyngroup.com, on sale now at REI for 25% off of $449.95, REI.com. Lifestraw Go Series Tumbler 20 oz This insulated tumbler works double duty as a travel mug to keep drinks hot or cold while also filtering bacteria, parasites, microplastics and dirt, when you drink out of the included straw, which attaches to the filter that sits in the tumbler. The carbon filter removes chlorine and other chemicals for improved water taste. The membrane microfilter lasts up to 1,000 galloons, and its more narrow base fits cup holders. Empty, it weighs 1.2 pounds. Bonus: Each purchase from the company provides safe water for a year for one child. $59.95, lifestraw.com. Clearsource Ultra RV Water Filter This top-of-the-line system filter for RVs employs technology developed by NASA to remove or reduce heavy metals, bacteria, cysts and viruses. While I don’t have a way to scientifically test exactly what any of these water filters I’m reviewing remove (other than I never got sick, in this case, RV’ing through the South), I trust each company’s third-party testing. Clearsource states: “No other RV water filter on the market provides anything close to (the) level of protection,” including a VirusGuard filter Clearsource says provides even better protection than many advanced survival filters. Its durable construction includes a powder-coated metal chassis and stainless steel fittings for simple and safe set up between your overnight water source and your RV. And, I didn’t notice any water pressure change using the filter. All this heavy-duty technology does weigh a bit — 28 pounds — but you can leave it outside without worrying. It also comes in a smaller, lighter-weight “mini” version. When storing, simply empty water from the canisters, let dry and store them in zip-lock bags. $599, clearsourcerv.com. Hydrapak Stow Flexible 500 ml Bottle This pocket-size (7.2 x 4.7 inch) collapsible water bottle (no filtration) is great for traveling light and backpacking. When I’m not on the go, I store it in my dog’s bag (yes, she has a travel bag, too), so I always have something that takes virtually no room to fill with water for her to drink. Its “Beyond” lifetime guarantee speaks to its durability. Weighing in at 1.4 ounces empty, it’s also great to stash in a ski jacket to hydrate on the hill, and the flip-top cap makes it easy to pop open and close with one hand. It includes a spill-proof nozzle — a must-have. $20, hydrapak.com. Lifestraw Peak Series Collapsible Squeeze Bottle Water Filter System This 650-ml bottle is also collapsible — and it filters water. It’s a cinch to use: You can drink filtered water directly from the nipple; it removes over 99% of bacteria, parasites and microplastics and includes a backwash syringe. It filters a total of 500 gallons. This was one of my go-tos for foreign travel because it packs so small. It’s obviously great for backpacking, too. $37.95, lifestraw.com. Katadyn Steripen Ultra UV Water Purifier I also used this in my foreign travels because I could take the lightweight (0.3 pound) sanitizer to restaurants and lodging and drink the tap water safely by zapping it with this rechargeable ultraviolet purifier. It’s effective against 99.9+% virus, bacteria, protozoa and cysts. It purifies up to 1 liter in 90 seconds and lasts for 8,000 treatments. Just press the button, submerge in water and stir; when the treatment completes, a smile lights up on the screen. On sale at REI.com for $101.19, katadyngroup.com. Katadyn BeFree AC Bottle 0.7-liters This lightweight bottle maintains it shape, which is also a nice feature to have when you don’t have to pack super-small and want easy access to it from a pack or while biking. A two-stage filtration system removes bacteria, protozoa and microplastics and improves water taste. It lasts up to 1,000 liters, depending on water quality, and it’s EZ-Clean membrane doesn’t involve any backflushing; just shake or swish it to clean; filters up to 2 liters per minute. katadyngroup.com; $37.39 at REI.com. Wendell Water Duo Shower Filter This NSF-certified shower filter has been verified to reduce “forever chemicals” (PFAS) and particulates. I have to trust the NSF on those chemicals, but I definitely could detect chlorine (it removes 99%) before installing this. You can easily monitor the filtration process with its dual cartridge system; clear filters indicate when it’s time to replace them; they’re designed to last for up to 8,000 gallons. It’s compatible with all standard shower heads, and you can install it without tools. And, I didn’t notice much change in water pressure; it pumps out 2.8 gallons per minute (GPM). In comparison, 2 GPM from low-flow shower heads is considered a “mild reduction” from standard showers, and 1.25 GPM or below is considered strict water conservation. $89.99, weddellwater.com. Ocean Bottle Peak Original 24 oz and 12-ounce Brew Flask This isn’t just another insulated water bottle; it’s made from 90% recycled stainless steel and supports social services for those in need. It seals well, keeps beverages cool for 15 hours (30+ if you add ice) or hot for seven hours with its triple insulation, which includes a copper layer, and doesn’t clunk around when you place it on a table, thanks to its soft rubber base. And, it fits into regular cup holders. Plus, it’s high-tech, with an embedded NFC chip to track refills, along with an app. Recycled stainless steel (90%) also comprises the leak-proof flask. Purchases fund the collection of thousands of plastic bottles. Their mission: to prevent the equivalent of 10 billion plastic bottles from entering the ocean by 2030; collectors exchange plastic for money to receive healthcare, education, mental health services and financial support. Bottle (available in 11 colors and three patterns), $39-$42; flask, $37-$40 (18 colors and two patterns), oceanbottle.co. Flipbelt Tahoe Hydration Vest Ultralight and airy, this is a great running vest. It comes with two 17-ounce soft flasks and accommodates a 2.5-liter bladder in the back. It offers 13 various-sized pockets, including a larger zippered one that carries a phone. While it includes three adjustable chest straps and elastic compression cords for quick, micro-adjustments as you consume water and the weight load shifts, the vest runs very small; I’d order at least one size larger than normal. Comes in various colorways and includes a built-in emergency whistle. $136, flipbelt.com.
