Иконка контркультуры: легендарный автобус Furthur доставлен в Сан-Франциско для реставрации

In One Ear: Furthur goes further Published 6:00 am Thursday, August 27, 2026 Oregon author Ken Kesey, famous for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” might be even more well-known for his 1939 International Harvester school bus, an Oregon icon named Furthur, which carried the counterculture writer and the Merry Pranksters on a cross-country trek in 1964. According to Gratefulweb, the Merry Pranksters’ antics also “played an important role in the early history of the Grateful Dead.” Ever since 1969, the once psychedelically-painted bus has been sitting on the Kesey family farm in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. After decades of outdoor exposure, Gratefulweb says, the bus was moved to a protected storage area, out of the public eye. Even though the Smithsonian was interested in acquiring Furthur, the Kesey family kept it. “When people ask what my best work is, it’s the bus,” Ken Kesey told The Spokesman-Review in 2000. “Those books made it possible for the bus to become.” Well, Further is out of the barn, and has been transported to the County Fair Building (Hall of Flowers) in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to be on display from Sept. 5 to Oct. 25. After that, it will be completely restored for exhibition. As the bus was sitting outside waiting to be picked up, Ken Keseys’ son, Zane Kesey noted: “First time the sun has touched it in 20-plus years. First time leaving the farm since Woodstock.” (Photo: Zane Kesey)
