‘Full of life’: HGTV designer, KC nonprofit transform Northeast Middle School staff lounge KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Teachers at Northeast Middle School got an emotional surprise Wednesday when they walked into a newly renovated staff lounge — the result of a collaboration between an HGTV design star, a local construction group and a nonprofit. HGTV Design Star Jennifer Bertrand, JE Dunn Young Professionals and the nonprofit PrincipalsConnect partnered to overhaul a space that staff had largely avoided. The finished lounge features a mural, wallpaper, a fireplace and a massage chair. ‘This is for us?’ Bertrand said watching teachers experience the reveal was the highlight of the project. “To get to see teachers see a space that was made with love for them is my favorite part,” Bertrand said. “I get to be like Santa Claus, I get to watch them say, ‘this is for us?’” Art teacher Shalonda Armah said the massage chair stood out immediately. “The massage chair in there? Oh my gosh, I’m like that’s better than my nursery at home,” Armah said. Assistant Principal Amy Carlson pointed to the design details. “The artistic parts like the mural and wallpaper space — I think just having everything so bright and vibrant,” Carlson said. Seventh lounge transformation for KC schools PrincipalsConnect founder Carol Hallquist said the organization has been working to support local educators for nearly a decade. “PrincipalsConnect focuses on making teachers’ lives easier today,” Hallquist said. “Nine years ago we started this.” The Northeast Middle School lounge is the seventh Kansas City teacher lounge the nonprofit has transformed. Restorative Justice Coordinator Martin Atwell described the before-and-after in simple terms. “It was a place no one wanted to go and now it’s full of life,” Atwell said. Carlson said community partnerships make projects of this scale possible. “As hard as we try with limited resources, we really want to give back to our teachers all the time,” Carlson said. “Having community partners that can do this on this scale means so much.” Armah said the new space addresses a practical need. “Teachers need a good place to sit down after being on our feet and our classrooms all day,” Armah said. “So I’m just really impressed with what they did here.” Copyright 2026 KCTV.
