Considering Christine Sims didn't plan on returning to footy this year, walking away with two grand final wins and a one major individual award speaks volumes about her talent. Picture by Nick Guthrie. On Sunday, September 5, Sims claimed two titles in just five hours - a league tag premiership followed by a PMPW triumph - with Orange CYMS. Sims' name was called during the league tag presentation as she received the player of the match award after scoring CYMS' first try win the 18-10 win over Forbes. Later that afternoon, she crossed again during the dominant 30-10 win over Mudgee in the PMPW decider. The humble centre seemed oblivious to how gifted a footy player she truly is. "I was not expecting the award at all, the girls were yelling 'Chrissy, that's you!" like three times before I realised," Sims said with a laugh. "I give more credit to the girls than myself." Mudgee's only loss during the regular was a forfeit due to a lack of players, but Sims and her teammates were dominant from the opening whistle. Orange CYMS is the second club to win a PMPW title, after the Wiradjuri Goannas won last year's inaugural grand final. The Goannas didn't take part in this year's competition, and the same went for the Castlereagh Cougars. Just four clubs competed in the competition this year and one of those, Dubbo CYMS, forfeited more games than it played. Sims loved being a part of the tackle competition, but was keen to see it grow in the coming years. "I think it'll be good once there's more teams. We only had three or four rounds this year, and I think Vipers (and the Western Women's Rugby League summer competition) might not be a thing next year, so hopefully teams from around there will be in the competition," she said. After hesitantly returning this year, Sims was quick to answer when asked whether she'll be back in Orange CYMS colours next year. "Definitely," she said. "I just wanted to move back into town and there was too much travelling out that way," she said. "I also just love the girls." Sims also stars on the rugby union field alongside several of her league teammates, a close-knit bond she considers central to her success. Just 24 hours before her league glory at Forbes' Spooner Oval, Sims lined up for Orange City Lionesses in the Ferguson Cup rugby union grand final. While Dubbo Roolettes took out a 37-16 victory, falling just short didn't dampen the weekend for Sims. "We didn't get the win yesterday, but getting two today feels pretty awesome as well," she said. While Sims was missing her number one supporter on the sidelines, her young daughter, Oakleigh King, was never far from her mind during the big win. "She is doing really good, she's sick at the moment but she's on the mend," Sims said. After powering through two massive days of rugby and footy, Sims is more than ready to celebrate with her teammates and friends at their long-awaited Silly Sunday. "It will be good to celebrate with the girls, just because we do get around each other week in and week out, we put in the effort and we get the job done," she said.
