Британские покупатели все чаще выбирают функциональную сантехнику вместо декоративных трендов

UK consumers are becoming more selective about homeware purchases. For retailers, products that combine considered design with practical everyday benefits are increasingly easier to justify than short-lived decorative trends. For years, much of the homeware market was driven primarily by appearance. That is beginning to change as shoppers place greater value on products that offer durability, convenience and clear everyday benefits. The shift can be seen in categories such as modern illuminated bathroom mirrors for UK homes, where integrated lighting, anti-fog technology and adjustable settings turn a traditionally decorative purchase into a practical bathroom fitting. Seasonal colours, finishes and social-media trends still influence purchasing decisions, but economic pressure is changing the way consumers define value. Buyers increasingly expect home products to do more than look attractive: they should solve recognisable problems, perform reliably and justify the space and money invested in them. This shift is particularly visible in bathroom retail, where mirrors, lighting, storage and electrical products are becoming more closely integrated. Value now means more than a low price Price remains important, but the cheapest option is not automatically perceived as the best value. Research previously reported by Retail Times found that 75% of consumers would shop around for a better homeware deal, while 67% were prepared to spend more on products offering greater durability or quality. This indicates a more considered purchasing process in which shoppers balance the upfront price against expected lifespan, reliability and practical usefulness. The change creates an opportunity for retailers selling functional homeware. A product that removes the need for several separate purchases, reduces daily inconvenience or adapts to different uses can present a stronger value proposition than an inexpensive decorative alternative. For example, a conventional bathroom mirror provides reflection, but the surrounding space may also require separate task lighting and a solution for condensation. An integrated-light mirror can combine several of these functions within a single installation. The commercial lesson extends beyond mirrors. Across homeware, products that combine functions can be easier for cautious consumers to justify, provided the benefits are clearly explained and genuinely useful. Bathrooms are becoming more considered retail spaces Bathrooms were once treated primarily as functional rooms, but consumers now expect them to support comfort, grooming, storage and relaxation as well. This has expanded the number of factors influencing a bathroom purchase. A shopper choosing a mirror may consider: Whether the light is suitable for shaving, skincare or makeup How the product looks when switched off Whether it includes a demister function Whether brightness and colour temperature are adjustable How its dimensions relate to the vanity and available wall Whether professional electrical installation is required How easily the product can be cleaned and maintained What warranty, delivery and damage protection are provided These questions move the product out of the purely decorative category. The purchase becomes closer to choosing a small appliance or permanent bathroom fitting, even when design remains an important part of the decision. For retailers, that means the product page must do more than display an attractive lifestyle photograph. It must help the customer understand whether the product suits the room, the intended routine and the practical requirements of installation. Function must be easy to understand Adding more features does not automatically make a product easier to sell. Extensive feature lists can create uncertainty if shoppers cannot understand which functions matter to them. Retailers therefore need to translate technical specifications into practical outcomes. “Three colour temperatures” is a specification. Explaining that warmer lighting can create a softer atmosphere in the evening, while neutral or cooler lighting can provide clearer visibility for grooming, gives the specification a purpose. The same principle applies to demister pads, touch controls, lighting direction and smart features. Product information should answer three questions: What does the feature do? When is it useful? Are there any limitations or installation requirements? A demister pad, for example, can help keep a defined part of the mirror clearer after a shower, but it does not replace adequate bathroom ventilation. Backlighting can create attractive ambient illumination, but it may not provide the same facial visibility as lighting projected towards the user. Clear explanations help shoppers select the appropriate product rather than simply choosing the model with the longest feature list. They can also reduce returns caused by mismatched expectations. If a customer understands the difference between decorative backlighting and task-focused front lighting before ordering, they are more likely to choose a product suited to their routine. Specification transparency builds online confidence Home improvement products can be difficult to evaluate online because shoppers cannot physically examine their dimensions, finish or lighting performance. Images remain important, but attractive lifestyle photography is no longer enough. Customers also need accurate measurements, product specifications, installation information and realistic explanations of how the product performs. Useful online content may include: Exact product dimensions Package dimensions and gross weight Wall-mounting and clearance considerations Lighting position and available colour settings IP rating and intended use Power and installation method Demister coverage Warranty conditions Delivery estimates Customer photographs in real bathrooms Comparison and sizing tools This information reduces the gap between the online product image and the item that eventually arrives. The importance of building purchase confidence is supported by previous research reported by Retail Times, which found that home-products shoppers valued reviews, recommendations and access to knowledgeable advice. Retailers that cannot offer a physical showroom must recreate as much of that reassurance as possible through their digital experience. Specification transparency is especially important for large or fragile products. Customers may need to know whether an item can be carried through a narrow hallway, supported by a particular wall or positioned without interfering with taps, sockets, cabinets and shower screens. Providing this information before checkout helps the customer make a more confident decision and reduces avoidable enquiries after purchase. Reviews are becoming part of product education Customer reviews are often treated primarily as social proof. For functional homeware, however, they can also help explain the product. A photograph showing a mirror installed above a particular vanity width gives other customers a clearer sense of scale. A review discussing light quality or condensation provides practical context that may not be obvious from a specification table. The strongest review presentation combines: A verified rating The customer’s written experience An authentic installation photograph The exact product reviewed Enough context to understand the bathroom or use case Retailers should not rely only on generic praise. Detailed, credible reviews can reduce unsuitable purchases and help customers form more realistic expectations. Customer photographs are particularly valuable because they show products under ordinary household conditions rather than controlled studio lighting. They can demonstrate how a shape works with a particular vanity, how the lighting appears against different wall finishes and whether the product feels appropriately proportioned in a real bathroom. In this way, reviews become part of the buying guide rather than simply a score displayed beside the price. Fulfilment and aftercare are part of the product A bathroom mirror, cabinet or electrical fitting cannot be evaluated solely by its appearance and price. These products may be large, fragile and more complicated to replace than small decorative items. Delivery and aftercare therefore become part of the core retail proposition. Recent ecommerce data covered by Retail Times showed particularly strong parcel-volume growth in categories including homewares and DIY. As these categories grow online, shoppers will increasingly compare not only products but also the reliability of the retailer behind them. Important considerations include: Whether the item is dispatched domestically or internationally The expected processing and delivery period How fragile products are packaged What happens if an item is damaged in transit Whether replacement parts or technical guidance are available How long the warranty lasts How easily the customer can contact the retailer These factors may not generate the first click, but they can determine whether a shopper completes the purchase. For bulky or fragile homeware, a low price can quickly lose its appeal if delivery terms are unclear or damage claims are difficult to resolve. Retailers that communicate fulfilment and aftercare policies clearly can differentiate themselves without competing solely on discounts. Local stock can also become part of the value proposition when it produces shorter delivery times, clearer communication and a more manageable replacement process. The important point is not simply to make a “local” claim, but to explain what practical benefit it provides to the customer. AI Is changing how shoppers compare home products Product research is becoming more conversational. Instead of searching only for a product name, consumers can ask AI tools questions such as: What size mirror suits an 800mm vanity? Is backlighting bright enough for shaving? What is the difference between a demister and a heated mirror? Can an LED mirror be installed near a shower? Which colour temperature works best in a windowless bathroom? Is one large mirror or two smaller mirrors better for a double vanity? Retail Times has reported growing consumer interest in using AI for product research and price comparison. This means retailers need content that gives clear, specific answers rather than relying on short descriptions filled with promotional language. Accurate comparison tables, buying guides, FAQs, sizing tools and well-structured specifications make product information easier for both customers and search platforms to interpret. This does not mean every retailer needs to produce hundreds of repetitive articles. A smaller collection of authoritative resources can be more useful when each page answers a distinct question and connects naturally to the relevant category or product. Retailers should also ensure that their product claims are consistent across descriptions, structured data, comparison tools and policy pages. Conflicting information about dimensions, features, delivery or returns can weaken customer confidence, regardless of whether the shopper discovers the product through a search engine, social platform or AI assistant. The role of guided selling When products involve several dimensions, features and installation considerations, shoppers can become overwhelmed by choice. Guided-selling tools can reduce that friction. A size calculator might recommend a suitable width based on the vanity and available wall. A comparison table can help shoppers filter products by shape, lighting style, demister function, power method and price. These tools are useful because they convert a large catalogue into a manageable shortlist. The objective should not be to push every customer towards the most expensive product. Good guided selling helps the shopper identify the product that fits the space and intended use. That can improve conversion while also reducing the likelihood of an unsuitable order. Retail staff perform this function naturally in a showroom by asking questions. Online retailers must reproduce that conversation through their navigation, content and product-selection tools. What this means for homeware retailers Retailers do not need to turn every home product into a connected device. Functionality should remain proportionate to the customer’s problem. The broader opportunity is to treat useful features as part of a complete buying experience: Begin with the problem the product solves Explain technical features in everyday language Provide accurate specifications and realistic limitations Help customers compare suitable options Show products in genuine homes Make delivery, installation and aftercare information visible Support research across search, social media and AI platforms Ensure claims remain consistent throughout the customer journey Consumers may continue to enjoy trend-led décor, but more considered home purchases will increasingly be judged by how successfully design and utility work together. For bathroom retailers, the strongest products will not simply photograph well. They will make daily routines easier, give customers confidence before ordering and remain useful after the initial design trend has passed. Tags: UK bathroom retail
