Французский сленг FDP: почему изучающим язык стоит знать это оскорбление, но не использовать

Why do I need to know fdp? It's a common acronym in casual forms of written French, such as text messaging or social media. But this is one that we are suggesting that French learners 'know don't show'. What does it mean? The acronym stands for fils de pute - this literally translates as 'son of a whore' and as you would expect it is an insult. In fact it's a strong insult - it's sometimes translated into English as 'son of a bitch', but it's actually much stronger and more offensive than that. This is pretty much the nuclear option if you want to insult someone, and it's a phrase that doesn't really have a milder/jokey way of saying it, unlike French swearwords such as putain or con. We therefore suggest that French learners refrain from using it. READ ALSO: What's the worst possible insult you can use in French? So why are we telling you about it? Because it's still useful to know some casual words or phrases, even if you don't intend to use them. And this one is becoming increasingly common on social media if people want to really vent about a person or company whom they strongly dislike (don't believe us? Try searching 'Emmanuel Macron fdp'). Because this is an acronym, you won't really hear it in spoken French - although if you were to say it, it would be pronounced eff-day-pay - it's reserved for informal writing, similar to NTM. For this reason it's often paired with slangy, colloquial and abbreviated French. (Other people) use it like this Hier la ministre de l’environnement veut démissionner parce que Macron est un fdp - Yesterday the Environment Minister wanted to resign because Macron is an arsehole Casse-toi, fdp - Get lost, dickhead Faut vraiment être un fdp pour allumer un feu - You'd really have to be a dick to light a fire Not to be confused with The FDP is a German centrist political party - Freie Demokratische Partei or Free Democratic Party. FDP is also used in international trade to signify 'frais de port' - or transit fees for shipping.
