Free soil conditioner giveaway returns this month at Padworth West Berkshire residents can once again collect free soil conditioner as part of a council giveaway. West Berkshire Council and Veolia have brought back their popular peat-free soil conditioner giveaway this month at Veolia’s Waste Management Facility in Padworth. It will be available on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, from 10am to 4pm – with no booking required. Residents looking to collect the conditioner should take proof of their West Berkshire residency, along with their own bags, boxes or containers, as the soil conditioner will be provided loose. They are also advised to take their own shovel, and to support fair access for everyone, residents are asked to take a reasonable amount. At peak times restrictions of five containers per vehicle will be enforced. The event is always popular, but residents do not need to arrive early as the soil conditioner is restocked throughout the day. The soil conditioner is produced at the facility using food and garden waste collected from residents across West Berkshire. Since the giveaways began more than 450 tonnes of soil conditioner have been collected by residents. West Berkshire's executive member for environment and highways Stuart Gourley (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill) said: “This giveaway continues to be a fantastic example of what can be achieved when residents recycle their food and garden waste. “The soil conditioner is produced locally from material collected in West Berkshire and gives something valuable back to residents for use in their gardens and allotments. “Whether you're preparing flower beds, vegetable patches or improving soil ahead of winter, we'd encourage residents to come along and make the most of this free resource.”
