Забытые пароли становятся причиной потери продаж для канадских интернет-магазинов

Online shopping has become an integral part of Canadian life. Whether purchasing groceries, booking travel, ordering electronics or browsing fashion brands, consumers increasingly expect quick and seamless digital experiences. Yet a surprisingly simple obstacle may be quietly costing online retailers significant revenue: forgotten passwords. New research from HostingAdvice suggests that login difficulties remain a major contributor to abandoned purchases. While the survey focused on American consumers, the findings raise important questions for Canadian businesses operating in an increasingly competitive e-commerce environment. The study found that more than half of respondents had abandoned an online purchase after encountering login or password problems. The data also pointed to a strong generational divide, with younger consumers proving much less willing to persevere when encountering authentication barriers. The findings highlight a challenge that extends beyond cybersecurity and into customer experience, digital commerce and retailer profitability. When businesses analyse why consumers abandon shopping carts, attention often focuses on factors such as delivery costs, unexpected fees or complicated checkout procedures. According to the Baymard Institute, which studies online shopping behaviour, cart abandonment rates remain high across the e-commerce sector. While pricing and shipping concerns feature prominently, account access issues also create friction that can drive potential customers away. Forgotten passwords may appear to be a minor inconvenience. However, modern consumers have little patience for delays. In a marketplace where alternative retailers are only a few clicks away, even small obstacles can cause users to abandon transactions. For Canadian retailers competing not only with domestic rivals but also with international e-commerce giants, this friction can have direct financial consequences. Canadians are managing more digital accounts than ever The challenge partly reflects the growing complexity of online life. Consumers now maintain accounts for retailers, streaming services, banks, insurers, healthcare providers, loyalty schemes, government services and workplace platforms. Remembering dozens of unique passwords has become increasingly difficult. Consumer groups encourage Canadians to use strong and unique passwords for each account. While this improves security, it also increases the cognitive burden placed on users. The result is familiar to many shoppers: a customer identifies a product, decides to make a purchase, reaches the checkout page and suddenly realises they cannot remember their login credentials. At that point, even a motivated customer may decide to postpone the purchase or abandon it entirely. One of the most striking findings from the HostingAdvice survey is the difference between generations. Younger users appear particularly unwilling to tolerate password-related interruptions. This reflects broader shifts in digital expectations among consumers who have grown up with smartphones, biometric authentication and instant access to services. Members of the so-termed Generation Z increasingly expect technology to work with minimal effort. For many younger users, traditional passwords feel outdated compared with alternatives such as fingerprint authentication, facial recognition or ‘passwordless’ login systems. This trend aligns with growing industry support for passwordless authentication standards. The FIDO Alliance, which includes major technology companies and financial institutions, has promoted authentication methods designed to reduce reliance on conventional passwords while maintaining strong security. Hence, as younger consumers become a larger share of the marketplace, businesses that continue to rely heavily on traditional password systems may face increasing customer frustration. The rise of passwordless technology The technology sector has become increasingly interested in eliminating passwords altogether. Major technology companies including Microsoft and Apple have backed the development of passkeys and biometric authentication systems. Passkeys use cryptographic credentials stored on trusted devices, allowing users to authenticate through fingerprint scans, facial recognition or device-based verification rather than memorising passwords. Advocates argue that these systems offer two major advantages. They improve security by reducing opportunities for phishing attacks and credential theft, while also simplifying the user experience. For online retailers, reducing login friction could directly improve conversion rates and customer satisfaction. Canada’s e-commerce market continues to grow rapidly. Online shopping has become an increasingly important component of consumer spending. Businesses are investing heavily in digital channels, personalised shopping experiences and improved customer engagement. However, retailers often focus their digital transformation efforts on product recommendations, artificial intelligence, marketing automation and analytics platforms while overlooking basic account accessibility issues. The HostingAdvice findings suggest that authentication deserves greater attention. Retailers may need to ask several questions, including: Are customers being forced to log in before checkout? and Is account recovery simple and intuitive? Other considerations include: How many steps are required to reset a password?, as well as are passwordless authentication options available? Does the login process work effectively on mobile devices? Even small improvements could reduce abandonment rates and capture sales that might otherwise be lost. Security remains essential and Canada continues to experience significant levels of cybercrime, identity theft and credential-based attacks. Organisations must protect customer data while maintaining smooth digital experiences. The challenge is finding an appropriate balance. Government guidance emphasises that security controls should be both effective and usable. Systems that are excessively burdensome may encourage users to adopt poor security habits, including password reuse and weak credentials. Passwordless authentication technologies increasingly promise the best of both worlds: stronger security and a simpler customer experience. A customer experience issue disguised as a security issue The broader lesson from the HostingAdvice research is that password problems should no longer be viewed solely as an IT or cybersecurity concern. They have become a customer experience issue. Consumers increasingly expect instant access, minimal disruption and seamless journeys from product discovery to purchase. Every additional click, delay or verification step creates another opportunity for abandonment. For Canadian retailers operating in a crowded digital marketplace, the difference between completing a sale and losing a customer may be as simple as a forgotten password.
