Манга «Fool Night» о превращении людей в растения выйдет на английском языке 15 сентября

The ten English-language volumes of Fool Night — a seinen manga about dying people surgically converted into oxygen-producing plants as a government-sanctioned response to ecological collapse — will be complete on the shelf on September 15, when Viz Media releases Vol. 10 under its VIZ Signature imprint at viz.com for September 15. That is eleven days from today, and seventy-two days before the November 26 Netflix premiere of the first anime ever produced as a formal collaboration between studios Sunrise and Shaft. For a reader who has never encountered Fool Night and wants to understand what they will be watching — or who wants to read the story at full length before the adaptation compresses it — the window to start is now, while it is still genuinely useful to do so. The manga's thirteen Japanese volumes are in print through Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior as of June 30, 2026, when Vol. 13 was released. English readers will have access through Vol. 10 next week, with Vol. 11 scheduled to follow. The series is ongoing. What Fool Night Is, and Why the Premise Is Harder to Dismiss Than It Sounds Fool Night is set roughly one hundred years from now. Thick, permanent cloud cover has sealed Earth from sunlight. Without photosynthesis, plant life has largely died off, and atmospheric oxygen has dropped to the point where the state must manage its distribution. Humanity's countermeasure is Transfloration: seeds are surgically implanted into the bodies of people near death, and over approximately two years, the patient's body converts irreversibly into a plant organism called a reika, or spirit blossom. The process eliminates speech, then cognition, then the human form entirely. In exchange, volunteers receive a one-time payment of ¥10,000,000 — approximately $64,100 USD at current September 2026 exchange rates. Protagonist Toshiro Kamiya is a young man crushed by debt while caring for his ill mother. After exhausting every other option, he undergoes the procedure through an illicit route and discovers, in the process, a unique ability: he can hear and decode the fragmented signals of existing spirit blossoms — residual consciousness persisting in plant tissue after conversion. That ability draws him into a sociopolitical murder mystery built around Ivy, a fully transflorated individual who somehow retains the capacity for independent movement and is responsible for approximately twenty deaths. The series' emotional register is body horror beneath a sociopolitical thriller surface. The imagery of people you loved slowly becoming immobile flowering structures — still partially conscious, still dimly present — while the state monetizes their dying operates at a different frequency than most dystopian fiction. Kasumi Yasuda has described the manga's central preoccupation as how hard it is to escape poverty. The ¥10,000,000 (~$64,100) Transfloration payment is a precise crystallization of that theme: the sum is large enough to appear fair and small enough to be structurally insufficient. It covers debts accumulated during the desperation that drove the decision without enabling escape from the conditions that generated those debts. The system is not designed to help people escape poverty. It is designed to cost exactly enough to make consent feel real while ensuring that the population of volunteers never runs out. Transfloration and the Real Biology It Is Built On What distinguishes Fool Night from most sci-fi dystopia is that its central fictional technology is not extrapolated from imagination alone — it is extrapolated from a biological phenomenon that real researchers study, and still cannot fully explain. The closest real-world analog to Transfloration is kleptoplasty, the capacity of certain animal organisms to steal chloroplasts from algae and sustain them in functioning condition inside animal tissue. The most studied example is sea slug Elysia chlorotica, native to the Atlantic coast of North America. When juvenile E. chlorotica feed on the alga Vaucheria litorea, they extract its chloroplasts and sequester those chloroplasts alive inside the cells lining their own digestive tract. The chloroplasts continue photosynthesizing inside animal tissue — producing oxygen and fixing carbon — for periods of up to ten months, far beyond the capability of any other known multicellular animal. The sea slug turns, at least metabolically, part plant. What makes E. chlorotica scientifically significant is that researchers still cannot fully account for how it works. Chloroplasts require proteins encoded in the host plant's nuclear genome to sustain long-term photosynthetic function. E. chlorotica has no plant nucleus. A 2013 genome analysis found no evidence that the slug had incorporated algal nuclear genes into its own germline through horizontal gene transfer — the mechanism initially hypothesized to be responsible. The mechanism by which those chloroplasts sustain function in the absence of nuclear support remains unexplained. In 2024, a research team at the University of Tokyo and the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science achieved sustained photosynthesis in mammalian cells for at least two days — a feat that had eluded researchers for more than fifty years. They achieved this by modifying the host cell's autophagy pathways — specifically inhibiting the process by which animal cells identify and digest foreign organelles. Without that modification, host cells recognized the chloroplasts as non-self structures and destroyed them within hours. With it, the chloroplast-containing cells showed measurably increased growth rates, suggesting the plant organelles were supplying usable energy to the host through light-driven ATP production. Fool Night's Transfloration is, in biological terms, kleptoplasty and the RIKEN 2024 result engineered to operate at the scale of an entire human organism across a two-year conversion timeline. The manga's repeated framing of the process as imperfect, grotesque, and incompletely understood even by its practitioners is the scientifically accurate framing: the real biology is also imperfect, grotesque at the cellular level, and mechanistically mysterious in ways that decades of research have not resolved. The hard barriers — immune rejection of foreign plant tissue, the absence of plant nuclear gene support in animal cells, the temperature mismatch between RuBisCO enzyme optima and human body temperature — are real. The manga's scientists manage them imperfectly, for two years, at the cost of the patient's consciousness. Is the Oxygen Economy Science Fiction or Something Else? The most intellectually rigorous element of Fool Night's world-building is not the biology. It is the economics of what happens after the biology works. Earth's total atmospheric oxygen reservoir is the accumulated product of approximately 2.7 billion years of photosynthetic activity. It is so large that a complete cessation of biological oxygen production would not deplete it to dangerous levels within any human lifetime under normal consumption conditions. This is the objection most commonly raised against the series' premise — and the series does not ignore it. What Fool Night depicts is not atmospheric depletion but a production and distribution crisis. The oxygen that spirit blossoms generate is channeled into enclosed, city-scale life-support infrastructure managed by the state. Wealthy citizens can afford adequate supply. The poor ration it. The oxygen itself is not running out of the sky. The right to breathe adequately, within a state-administered distribution system, is running out for anyone below a certain income threshold. This interpretation — which the manga supports through its economic detail across multiple volumes — transforms Fool Night's premise from speculative catastrophe into a story about infrastructure economics and resource governance. Both of those things are real and ongoing. The state-administered oxygen tax inverts the logic of real-world cap-and-trade emissions markets. Those systems tax the production of harmful atmospheric outputs — carbon dioxide — to create a financial incentive to reduce them. Fool Night's oxygen economy taxes the consumption of a beneficial atmospheric substance, converting a commons into a revenue stream. The structure this creates maps precisely onto what political economists who have studied commons governance — from Garrett Hardin's foundational 1968 analysis through Elinor Ostrom's Nobel-winning work on commons institutions — describe as the conversion of a shared resource into a controlled commodity. The difference in Fool Night is that the state does not merely fail to protect the commons; it weaponizes the commons as a tool for generating the economic desperation that fills its volunteer rolls. The ¥10,000,000 (~$64,100) Transfloration payment is where this structure becomes ethically specific. Bioethics research on financial incentives in research participation has long distinguished between coercive and unduly inducing offers. Both traditions share a concern with what the Belmont Report's justice principle — codified in 1979 for research ethics in the United States — requires: the requirement that research should not systematically recruit economically vulnerable populations as its primary subjects simply because their desperation makes them available. Transfloration passes every formal informed-consent criterion: the patient knows what they are agreeing to, is not physically coerced, and is paid. It violates the Belmont Report's justice principle by design. The system is structured so that the only people who volunteer at scale are the people who cannot afford not to, and the payment is calibrated to sustain that pool without exhausting it. Yasuda reveals in the manga's later volumes that the Institute's senior administrators are aware that alternative oxygen-production technologies exist and have deliberately suppressed them — because the Transfloration system's secondary function is managed population reduction. That revelation transforms the oxygen economy from a tragic necessity into a deliberate policy. The story stops being about what humanity will do to survive and starts being about what a particular class of humans will do to other humans when it controls the infrastructure of survival. What Toshiro Actually Hears The question of whether plants are conscious in any meaningful sense has generated substantial academic literature — researchers including Monica Gagliano, Stefano Mancuso, and the writer Michael Pollan have argued for sophisticated plant cognition; the scientific consensus in neuroscience holds that plants do not possess anything equivalent to subjective experience. Fool Night does not need either side of that argument. The manga's most defensible reading is that Toshiro is not perceiving plant consciousness. He is perceiving the residual electrical activity of human nervous systems that have not yet fully converted to plant tissue. In the early stages of Transfloration, the patient retains partial neural function. As plant tissue overtakes the nervous system across the two-year conversion window, that neural function degrades. What Toshiro receives is a signal from a nervous system in a late stage of structural disintegration: fragmented, emotionally legible, and fading over time as conversion completes. This framing is supported by real plant electrophysiology. Plants do not have neurons, but they generate and transmit action potentials through plasmodesmata — cell-to-cell channels — and respond to stimuli with measurable electrochemical signals. Suzanne Simard's foundational 1997 study at the University of British Columbia demonstrated that trees actively distribute carbon, water, and chemical distress signals through belowground fungal networks, transferring resources among neighboring trees including their own seedlings. None of this constitutes consciousness. But it establishes that plant tissue generates, transmits, and responds to complex signals in ways that remain incompletely understood — providing a scientific foundation for a world in which those signals might, under conditions produced by an incomplete two-year conversion, carry information that a human-adapted nervous system could partially decode. Sunrise and Shaft: Why the Split Makes Structural Sense The production arrangement for Fool Night is historically unusual. Sunrise and Shaft have operated as two of Japan's most influential animation studios for more than fifty years with near-opposite creative identities, and this collaboration is unprecedented — the first time the two studios have formally co-produced an anime. Sunrise, operating since 1972 and now a division of Bandai Namco Filmworks, built its reputation on franchise-scale productions — Mobile Suit Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass — characterized by external storytelling, meticulous mechanical and environmental design, and large-scale civilizational conflict rendered as physical action. Its visual grammar is extrospective. Shaft, founded in 1975 and artistically defined through its longtime collaboration with director Akiyuki Shinbo, developed a near-opposite visual language: introspective, architecturally abstract, dialogue-dense, and radically fragmented in its editing. The signature style — extreme perspective shifts, typography integrated into frames, sudden cuts to negative space, the expressionist still-frame sequences of the Monogatari series and Puella Magi Madoka Magica — prioritizes interior psychological states over external action. Fool Night's premise has a binary visual structure that maps almost precisely onto each studio's specific strengths. The external world — industrial cities lit by neon against permanent darkness, the Transfloration clinics and their procedural machinery, the political conflict over who controls the oxygen supply — is Sunrise territory. The interior world — Toshiro's psychological deterioration as plant tissue begins its work, the ethical weight of carrying dozens of spirit blossom voices simultaneously, the slow dissolution of identity across two years — is Shaft territory. Earlier in its history, Shaft contracted sub-animation work from Sunrise productions; this is the first time the two studios have formally co-produced an anime. Director Atsuyuki Yukawa, who served as a unit director on Makoto Shinkai's Suzume (2022), described the production's guiding aesthetic principle in a featurette released at Anime NYC 2026: Yukawa stated the crueler the scene, the more beautiful it should be. Jin Tanaka (Oshi no Ko) handles screenplay. Tatsuya Katō (Dr. STONE) composes the score. Sound director Yota Tsuruoka, whose work on A Silent Voice established his range in emotionally precise sonic design, oversees a production in which silence and the gradual absence of human speech are among the central expressive materials. Where the Manga Stands in Critical History Fool Night has received substantial critical recognition across three distinct evaluation systems. It was nominated for the Next Manga Award in 2022. It placed in Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023 — the annual industry-professional poll of best manga for male readers — placing it in company with the year's most critically regarded seinen titles. And it was included in the official selection of Angoulême 2023 — the 50th Angoulême International Comics Festival — placing it among the handful of manga nominated for Best Comic at Europe's most prestigious comics festival — in the same selection as Masakazu Ishiguro's Heavenly Delusion and Shun Umezawa's The Darwin Incident. It also won Best Suspense at Japan Expo Daruma Awards the same year. The Angoulême nomination is significant beyond its honorific value. The festival's selection process for manga requires that a work be available in French translation and have generated sufficient critical discussion among European readers to merit inclusion. Fool Night's presence in the 50th-anniversary edition — the year Hajime Isayama received a special career honor — indicates that the series was already operating at a level of international literary attention when most of its readership in Japan was still building. Approximately 600,000 copies in worldwide circulation across print and digital editions as of the most recent reporting. That figure is modest for a series with this level of critical recognition, which reflects the difficulty of translating a niche, emotionally demanding seinen title across language and cultural markets. The anime premiere on November 26, 2026, will reach an audience orders of magnitude larger. How to Read Fool Night Before November The ten volumes available in English through September 15 represent, at a volume-per-day pace, a ten-day read for a reader with sustained time for it, or a reasonable three-to-four-week read for someone picking it up across commutes and evenings. The Netflix premiere falls on the day before Thanksgiving — a release strategy that deliberately builds in a long-weekend binge window for North American viewers. Ten volumes of source material cover the manga's opening investigation arc, Toshiro's development of his ability, the full establishment of the oxygen economy's political structure, and the early stages of the Ivy murder mystery. What does the ¥10,000,000 Transfloration payment reveal about the manga's actual argument? The payment — approximately $64,100 USD at current exchange rates — is designed to be insufficient. Kasumi Yasuda has described the manga's central preoccupation as how hard it is to escape poverty, and the Transfloration payment crystallizes that theme structurally: it covers the debts that forced the decision without enabling escape from the economic conditions that generated those debts. Bioethicists distinguish between coercion and "undue inducement" — the payment does not physically force anyone — but the deeper issue, identified in foundational bioethics frameworks like the 1979 Belmont Report's justice principle, is: systems that systematically recruit economically desperate populations for irreversible procedures exploit background injustice even when each individual consent is technically voluntary. The manga's oxygen economy is designed to ensure that the volunteer pool never runs out — which is only possible if the payment is calibrated to be never quite enough. Is transfloration — turning people into plants — based on real science? More closely than most science fiction. The real biological analog is kleptoplasty, the capacity of certain organisms to steal chloroplasts from algae and sustain them in functioning animal tissue. Elysia chlorotica maintains live chloroplasts in its own cells for up to ten months — producing oxygen and fixing carbon inside animal tissue — by a mechanism that researchers still cannot fully explain. A 2024 study at the University of Tokyo and RIKEN achieved sustained chloroplast photosynthesis in mammalian cells for the first time in over fifty years, by suppressing the cell's autophagy pathways that would normally destroy foreign organelles. The barriers to human-scale transfloration remain enormous — immune rejection, the need for plant nuclear gene support, temperature incompatibility — but the manga's framing of the process as grotesque, imperfect, and only partially understood by its practitioners is the scientifically accurate framing. ⓒ 2026 TECHTIMES.com All rights reserved.
